Has anyone come up with a vialble replacement for the stock door limiters on a '75 FJ40? I realize the replacements are available, but they're pretty pricey. The restorer who did mine opted to use leather strap material, cut to the right length to accommodate the desired max open position of the door. He jury rigged a connection on the door end using the old limiters bolt/nut connection point. He then affixed it to the body side by drilling a hole in the metal with a bolt near where the OEM would have attached. It probably looked as good as anything that could have been used, other than the original limiter. However, the leather has already broken on the driver's door connection. I wonder if anyone else has found an ingenous alterenative solution. I would think something akin to what Jeep Wrangler uses with a fabric strap, with reinforcing metal where the bolt goes through the hole the fabric at each end, might help.

I think I made mine from 1" tubular nylon flat strap. Leather should be fine but it needed to be treated to prevent dry rot. Mink oil every few years would do it. On my Whites Smoke Jumper boots I rub in a very light coat of mink oil every year then SnoSeal warmed in with a hair drier.

Sounds exactly like what I had in mind. I will try the 1' flat strap with hollow rivets at each end's connection point, making certain it can accomodate the bolt size employed at each end. Thanks for confirming my solution.

I made my door pulls out of the nylon tubular strap also. Use a lighter to seal the cut end. I also take nail and heat it to red and "hot rod" the holes for screw/rivets. Lots of color choice. I use the stuff for a belt, sling, 4 wheeler tow strap....

is this on the central American rig?

you say 1975, but the doors and tub aren't
you would need the earlier round rod door limiters versus the flat bar 1975 door limiters
they can be made but good used ones are out there

a pic of the A pillar will tell us which version you need

My entire passenger door limiter was missing when I bought my 76 FJ40. I used a small alternator tension bracket like this one as a "temporary" fix. Looks close to OEM an is still working great decades later, no plans to fix it correctly! 😁

Yes, 3_puppies, mine is the rig from Costa Rica with the the tub, doors, and windshield from prior years. I did find the right kit on SOR.com and it IS the rounded bar from the earlier years that's required. I have the bolt that is on the door side, but I'm missing everything else, the round bar and all the pieces that are behind the slot in the pilllar (rubber cushion assembly). I just hate to pay over $200 to get the proper replacement. If it was a period perfect restoration, I would only opt for the OEM components. Since it's a restomod instead, some would consider its value already diminished with such a potpourri of components from years other than '75, I resigned myself to the notion that, in this case, an alternative solution is practical and acceptable. Having said that, if I could find the correct parts at a more reasonable price, I might still fork out money for the correct one. Sometimes being anal about such things can be costly, and I have a tendency to be that way. We actually restored two FJ40s in Costa Rica, one restomod and one OEM (as much as possible) and had them both shipped to the States. I probably should have taken the non-restomod unit for myself! This '75 is growing on me though. At first, I was chagrined to learn when it arrived it was absent door panels and dash vinyl, and contained components from prior years. However, now, I'm thinking of repainting the metal access panels on the doors gray to provide some contrast. This is starting to sound much more palatable. Lot's of these older units seemed to have used that scheme of a different color on the acess panels.

Cruiserkev, that was a pretty cleaver and, evidenlty, long-lasting solution you devised.

there is the classified section here on mud:

my WAG is if you post a wanted thread to what you want you would find the parts for less than $200
but you can't post you want parts for a 1975 when the parts aren't for a 1975 because you will get the wrong parts

Search is your friend.

There's a pair for sale ebay. Though they're still expensive, they appear complete and under $200. It appears Manafre has an affordable solution too.
