As a mechanical engineer, I too have some issues with the strength of bolt on components. It's not as if I don't think it can be done, it just as to be done right. Saying that, I would think that the proper way to execute this would be to have maybe 1/4" plate for both the pad on the bumper and and 1/4" plate for the mating surface on the stinger, upright, tubing (whatever). The 1/4" plate would not be the entire length of the top of the bumper, but just the contact points of the mating surface to prevent bending and sheering of the bumper top. Maybe use a bolt like this: http://www.mcmaster.com/#90909a534/=w6i4hp where you could get some strength and yet not look too pieced together.

Just my 2 cents.

I have some ideas but it is hard to explain till I do it. The plates for the stinger will remain the same and act as the mounting plate and the gusset. I'll keep you guys posted. Worst case, I don't feel it to be strong enough and I will just weld it as originally planed

I like the modular idea. I've always been jealous of the options the Jeep guys get for bumpers. I'm sure it was mentioned before, but what is the target price for bumper?
$800-1200 depending on options

Just so you know benc, I am very interested in your bumper (read: buying one), but I'm just starting a new job after being out of work for a while now, so I have some other priorities. Also, I'd like to see when it's "really" done.

Also, what winch are you using and what will the bumper accept?

I'm running the smittybilt 12k.
Any non integrated 8000-12.5k should fit. The only thing I'm not sure of is the solenoid box as ever winch has a different design.

That's what plasma cutters and grinders are for!!:D

So you offer nothing but "advice" throughout this thread and now you are out? But you would like to know what winch fits.......:hmm:

Keep up the good work Benc...this is a great looking bumper

It's better than sarcasm, at least it can be productive. To learn from one does not necessarily make the person of experience the customer.
Advice and opinions are like belly buttons... Everyone has one.

I would like mine welded. Shipping won't matter for me since I will be picking it up locally. Color is still the same Smooth Satin Black.

^^ I think it would be $40-$50

Welds sounds good to me. White powder coat and stinger with one of those 20" LED bars. Yep thats the ticket.

Well it looks like I'll just be welding them:) not worth it to do the modular if no one wants it. Got some of the brackets and center section. Need to make a few little tweaks but over all pretty close.

Also the powder coat will put the bumpers being coated about a week further out on the ship date.

Benc, I like the modular idea. You say that a tube wing may be offered. Any plans for a wing with more coverage at the fender arch to hide the washer bottle and frame area? Maybe just some steel plate stitched to the bottom edge to add depth at the corners. Not sure what the exact look would be.

If thats not in the plans I still like the bumper as is. Great work.

Thanks,
Honestly, I probably will not offer a production version with larger wings. There are plenty of other bulky options if that is what you like. My goal was to bring something that is not currently available for the 100 series, with a light weight low profile bumper. On mine I removed the cover on the washer bottle And paint it black. It pretty much disappears.
