I have a 94. Nothing I don't like about it compared to a 95+. If I had the same choice again between my 94 and a comparable 95, I would take the 95 since throwing a blower on there is an easier ordeal. YMMV

But are the changes enough to not buy a clean 94 with low mileage is the question... Any thoughts?

Bull****. Pure unadulterated bull****.

The decesion depends on a lot more than the year model.

Not according to the OP's question. Are the changes enough? And its been covered many many times. There are distinct advantages although some don't see them as advantages and from what I can tell JUST from this thread alone its "mainly" from people who have the 93 and 94 models. If you don't need airbags, go for a 93/94. If you don't want ABS, 93/94. If you want drum brakes, 93/94. You hate the thought of OBDII and being able to simplify your life with a ScanGauge, 93/94 is in your future. Think superchargers are gay, 93/94. Etc etc etc.

What I'm hearing is that the latest model US 80s just added WAY to much and dag nabbit, it ain't natural.

Maybe I'm alone in this but if I had to do it all over again and I could get a ZERO mile 97 or a ZERO mile 94 (both with ALL the trimmings) I would go 97 without a question because I have YET to hear a clear advantage the earlier models had over the later ones. <-- EDIT: maybe I'm not done reading ALL the threads on this forum :meh:

Are you making this up as you go? :D

1. Nearly all 93 and ALL 94 have ABS.
2. Nearly all 93 and ALL 94 have disc brakes front and rear.

And as far as the scan gauge simplifying things...93-94 codes can be pulled with nothing more than a paper clip. No gage needed.

Only two good reasons for possibly wanting a 95+ over 93-94
1. Airbags
2. The ability to more easily add a supercharger.

Also, if you don't want leather seating,( which I didn't), the 93,94 models years are easy to find with cloth. Starting in 95 Toyota started putting leather in most of the 80's for the US market, at least the ones I've seen here in Colorado. I've seen a few cloth 95-97's but they are rare compared to leather.

So, lots of choices, find an 80 that fits your needs and tastes.
Also, read the buying an 80 section of the FAQ and be prepared to open your wallet.

1991 all the way baby! That new dash and little transmission are suitable for guys that moisturize. (lol!)

(we now return you to more useful replies.)

'93 was such an improvement, but still hadn't perfected it yet. '94 had all the bugs worked out-awesome! '95 - '97 "overcooked the grits" trying to make improvements, but, how can you improve on perfection? 'nuff said! :hillbilly:

Nicely said!!

I've had a 94 and now I have a 96LX. So far I like the 96 better. It feels like it has a little more power and I like the idea of air bags. It also seems quieter on the road. What I don't like about my 96 is the broken power seat (I need new front driver's seat feet), my 94 had manual seats. I like the upgraded dash, not quite as dated as the 94. I also like the idea of slapping a super charger on it someday. I definitely wouldn't pass up a nice 94 though. The things I like better about my 96 are very slight advantages in my head.

I could buy a 95+ and replace the motorized leather seats with manual cloth seats (which I prefer). Swap in a beefier tranny and disable the airbags (which I don't trust) and would have a bitchin cruiser. Or I could just buy a locked ABSed 93.

Sorry went back to re-read and sure enough I am trying to argue when its too late at night. nearly all had those, but not all :flipoff2:

So yup all the LCs are awesome. I'm an ass. There are no advantages one year over another. :meh:

Mmmm, tasty serving of foot :flipoff2:

On the other topic, I had no idea the dashes were different in 95+ models...except for that gay looking plastic wood ;)

In my opinion though, I would love to have OBDII. I would have one of those cool little computer scanner things in the cabin and could monitor all temps etc in real time on one display. That would be awesome. Even so, if you offered me a 97 with exact same build/maintenance/miles/etc I dont think I'd trade. Its all about the man/truck mojo

Nothing else can compete with a Landcruiser so we have to find competition within the series. Therefore, we end up in petty arguments about which bulletproof transmission is more bulletproof or which fantastically engineered, long lasting engine is more fantastically long lasting.

Pretty much, but I think for most of us this is less argument and more poking fun at ourselves for humoring another "which is best" thread

With all the cons being thrown out there,

I think you should just ditch the cruiser and get a land rover Range rover:hillbilly::hillbilly:

This to me is the bottom line question to ask. Some one put up a poll asking this question and see what the results are.

:lol::lol::lol: So true.

man, its gotta have a 1FZ under the hood. Here at school we have various mechanical parts we talk about in class and analyize. Many of the parts are from the big 3. I thought they were good until i helped a friend tear down his 1fz, that engine has to be one of the best ever. its simply amazing, everything from the design to mfg. quality. The machining is great, next time one of you guys has a 1fz head, check out the intake ports.

After working on both a obd1 and obd2 i am leaning towards the obd1. I like the simplicty and i really am fond of the old dash. But its gotta have lockers!! oh...and its gotta be equipped with a 1fz. My 62 has a 3fe in it, and there is no comparison in the power and torque catagorey. Longevity...??Its a land cruiser...they all are good engines.

I'd rather own an early 2F powered FJ60 than any new Big 3 truck of my choice.
