Disc Brake Master Cylinder and Booster Compatability

Gday. I've done a search on this but there are so many different disc brake threads with very basic thread titles it makes it hard to find the right thread - if there is one.


My 1975 (complianced 02/75, but has has top mount wipers so may be a 74'?) has a dual reservoir brake M/C. The truck has had disc brake front end put in, (still drum rears) but I dont know what the discs are out of (was done before I bought it).

Problem is the master cylinder is leaking, so I need to either rebuild or replace. I can buy a cheap master cylinder off ebay (says new, not sure if they are brand new or rebuilt items, but they are cheap at only around $120AUD)

Am I better off replacing the dual reservoir M/C with a single reservoir HJ47 type? And if so will it fit onto my standard brake booster?

Hi, my suggestion is that you get the newer type of master cylinder (with only one reservoir) at good price on CCOT because these were specifically made for front disc brake and rear drums.

The booster, you can use plenty, out of any FJ40 '76 and up, any toyota mini trucks booster, any fj60 or fj62 series will also work, and also any our of a 80 series which you can cheap at the junk yard.

The thing with the booster, is that, if the booster is before a '76, are not made for disc brakes, so will have to modify the rod in order to make it work properlly.

The booster rod length is related to what vehicle the booster came out of, not if it's for disc brakes. Just make sure it's not too long before you install the master.
 
Running my July 74 master with four wheel disc brakes. Removed residual valves, and added a variable Wilwood proportioning valve, and was good to go... And stop.:D

I'm running 60 series disc on front, orig drums at rear, 80 series master with orig. booster. Only had to shim master approx 1/16" to reduce preload and all works great on my 72 40.

Well mine is a 75 so probably no go there, I also have a spare FJ45 that is a 76 model but not sure what month. I'd need to check the compliance plate. However, that still uses the twin reservoir and it only has drums front and rear.

Will the dual reservoir not work at all with discs? Or will it just work badly?

What is CCOT? I am in Australia.

Hi All:

Inventure, I drove my '74 FJ40 with '78 front disc brakes and the original drum brake booster and master cylinder without any issues.

I do think swapping in a master cylinder intended for a disc brake front would work even better. Many of the Toyota master cylinders interchange (40, 60, 70, 80 Series, HiLux, etc.)

Ok, as your Cruiser is an Australian model, they didn't come with disc brakes 'till 80's, so, my advise, get a single reservoir out of a 60 or 62 series and you can use your booster but you will probably to either used shims between the booster and the master cylinder or cutting the rod according to the shim distance, however, sometimes, just sometimes is not needed.... Your double reservoir master won't be good with disc brakes because these masters send more amount of fluid to be able to push the drums.

Hope it helps.... also in Australia I believe that 1984 BJs came with front disc brakes, so you can use those too.:wrench:
