Hello fellow forum members. Been a while since I've posted.

I'm considering a front disc conversion on a 1972 US based FJ40 (9/72 build date) and was hoping to get some insight/recommendations from the folks who have already completed the conversion.

Ordinarily I like to source parts from doner vehicles, etc but in this situation I'm wanting to buy a new, complete kit for front discs only

Would love to hear experiences on quality and also best/worst ease of installation.

I'm assuming I'll need to install a new master cylinder as well that is disc front/drum rear specific, correct?

Would appreciate any insight or links that you guys would be willing to share.

-Thanks!

Brandon

I think best is using stk Toyota FJ40 or FJ60 front brakes. You need donor parts from a 76 or later FJ40 or FJ60 along with the birfields, or find a complete donor front end. You can then get new rotors and new or rebuilt calipers along with a knuckle rebuild kit. A lot of Vendors on this site will be very helpful. Valley Hybrids, Cruiser Outfitters, Marks' Off Road, Cruiser Matts just to name a few. You'll end up servicing the knuckles as part of the swap. It's not difficult, it's just messy. You can go to FAQ's at the top of this section and scroll down to front ends. learn about small and large pattern knuckles. Search either here or on the net on FJ40 disc brake swap or knuckle rebuild or something like that. For the rear typically you'll need caliper brackets and GM rotors that have been machine for the rear axle. I think Poser still sells the brackets and machined rotors. You'll use GM metric calipers from a late 70'S Monte Carlo. You will need to add an adjustable brake proportioning valve for the rear brakes and remove the residual valves from you master. I think there's info in FAQ's and FAQ's tech links. Or search these subjects here or on the net and clicking on any link that references this site. These swaps have been covered extensively here.

Go here. We did our Mar '72 years ago using MUD's Faqs. Not difficult.
