I remembered seeing the differences between 88 vs. 89-90 FJ62s but can't locate it - what are the main differences?

I know 88's did not come with shoulder belts in the 2nd row, only lap belts, what are the others?

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving

my 88 has manual everything Mirrors, door locks, and now, a 4 speed. Good question tho and I'm curious what our trucks younger sisters owners have to say about it.

I don't think it's much but the computer is different. There also is an EGR temp sensor on later trucks, not present on 88s. Mine is an 89 but built in December of 88. If I remember right, there are 3 computers, 88, 89-90 federal, 89-90 California.

I wish my truck had the manual windows. The electric ones and their switches suck.

The California 62's, such as my '89, were the only one to come with the EGR temp sensor. As others have suggested, I believe the '88s were the only ones to come with manual windows and locks.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but like the OP, I can't find the posts mentioned that outline the differences between 88 and 89-90. From what I can gather, the differences are that some 88s have:

- Manual windows/locks
- Lap belts in the back
- Different computer for the 3F-E

Besides these differences, is there anything else that is significant?

I'm also curious if there were both California 88s and Federal 88s. My search has mostly been limited to 89-90 62s but I have come across a couple 88s out of state that I'm considering but am trying to find additional info on the differences.

Cheers,
Anthony

88s don't have rear seat head rests.

I'm not sure about the computer thing: I have both an 88 and 89 ECU in my possession, and they have the same part #. But maybe there is some internal difference? I am currently running the 88 ECU in my 89.

The only other difference I've noted other than what's been mentioned is that some of the electrical connectors are different colours between the model years, i.e. the 88 main relay connector is grey and the 89 is yellow (or vice versa, I can't recall). Nevertheless, the parts have all been interchangeable so far.

My Canadian market 88 had power locks and windows.

My 1988 built in December of 1987 has rear seat headrests, but lapbelts. Power windows and door locks.
Model is FJ62LG-PNEA

Also Originally a California Truck. from the "Vehicle Emission Control Information" sticker near the diagnostic port under the hood
"THIS VEHICLE CONFORMS TO U.S. EPA AND STATE OF CALIFORNIA REGULATIONS APPLICABLE TO 1988 MODEL YEAR NEW LIGHT-DUTY TRUCKS"

Unsure if there was a difference between California and US emissions in 1988.

I’ve had two ‘88s with rear seat headrests

My 88 has power window and door locks. I added the seat headrests and shoulder belt as most 88's have the threaded hole on the pillar for shoulder belts.

Our 88 has manual windows and locks - i think at one time it had powered side mirrors. Also has rear seat headrests. Came with "manual" adjust shoulder belts in the back, but I replaced with retracting ones from Seatbelt planet. Has the threaded anchors in the pillars.

Do you have the part number for the seatbelt planet retracts for the rear? I want to do the same.

Any photos of the install? Did you find the trim pieces as well?

Same with mine. January '88 with power accessories and rear lap belts too.

Here is the order details from Seatbelt planet. I've seen a lot cleaner and more involved installations by folks on here. I do not have the trim pieces that cover the belts as they go up from the retractor to the shoulder bit. Consequently when you fold the back seat up you have to move the belts on each side out of the way of the seat retaining mechanism. But it works OK.

I had an 89 that had manual mirrors and windows, it was the poverty pack model and it was a US spec rig.

my 88 has rear head rests- lap belts though (with an ancient manufacturer recall for said seatbelts)
She was born April 88 so maybe it was early or late for head rest change? 🤷‍♀️
