So I know the tachometer on my FJ62 won't be compatible with the new engine, and I need an alternative. Started looking around, but I'm not sure I know what I'm doing. Why doesn't the OEM tacho work? Are there diesel-specific tachos? Where will it read the rpms?

Thanks in advance, new to diesel, it's like voodoo right now.

I wish I could help. The 1HZ that went into my truck went into a HJ60.

What's your story again. What engine did you transplant?

The tachometer on the BJ60 reads from a Hall sensor on the bellhousing. The gasser tach won't work because they almost all rely on a signal from the coil and there is NO coil on a diesel.
There are also tachs available that work off the altenator and the injection pump.

 Even though it does not work, the swap should be a simple one. What engine did you implant?

Pics?

My tacho .. . in my 2H ( original engine ) works with alternator, and is very simple to connect. I'm not sure right now, if my tacho are difernt of your tacho, but in my case it's only manage 5 k rpm .. yellow line in 3500 and red line in 4 k.

What kind of diesel engine you running?

I used dist parts from my old 2F engine to make a tach pickup:

Is your tach original, factory?
I've got a tach (thanks Bob Bancroft!) but not sure where to connect...

Dang, FLcruiser, that's cool. Be sure to tell woody so he can link it from his tech page.

Henry, there is a tach that picks up pulses in the fuel injector line, but the display is digital. I posted the link once on these pages, maybe do a search. There is an Autometer gauge that picks up the engine speed off your alternator and can be calibrated manually to match your pulley ratio. Look at Autometer's website/

Why did you put on a 62 steering wheel? I like the look of the 60 steering wheel myself. The dash is clean though.

1985-87 60 series steering wheel also. The wheel itself is the same as the 70 series, it's the center section that changes.

This is the wheel out of my 1988 73 series.

Hello, I own a 1980 HJ47 with a 2H engine. I purchased a used tach from Specter which looks exactly as you describe. The tach has a 5 wire clip. Three wires are connected to individual screws 1 - black, 2 - back yellow and 3 - red. The remaining two enter the housing and provide power to the light 1 - white black and 2 - red black. I am unable to find any specs on the alternator connections yoy mentioned. My alternator is a replacement with a stud terminal (B) and terminal connections F, E and N. Could you help me with you waring connections?

Thanks

Reviving an old thread as i have the 1HDT diesel engine and the tach belongs to the 2F petrol. I did manage to find a used 12HT diesel tachometer but its 24V not 12V.
Any idea if there is a work around for that ?
