Diesel gurus, please help diagnose my 1HD-T

I know I am a LONG way away from the left coast, but the Diesel Doctor in Georgetown ON did my pump and injectors last year and it runs great. PO complained of excess smoke, and hard starts, but now it bearly smokes (just when it's drinking with friends) and runs great. The head Mec/owner seemed to know a lot about foriegn diesels (has a converted nissan xterra).

I think people would say the same thing about some cruiser heads
Why

Because its for the love of something

Back on subject...

We did a diesel Motorvac on it Saturday. It belched smoke for the entire process, then afterwards started to clear up. Was told to expect smoke for a few days at least while it finishes exhaling the nasty crud that's been built up inside it for so long. But already the smoke has gotten better - I'd say 80% better!!!

This is great news. Drove around all day yesterday morning, little to no smoke... ran normally. Until yesterday evening, driving out on the highway.... major shuddering and rattling - enough I pulled over to see if one of my wheels was falling off. Nothing was loose. Stood at the engine bay and revved to about 3,000 rpm... it's the engine doing it. Well, ****. It sounds and feels like a misfiring gas engine, for example a VW that has a dying coil pack. Starts just fine, cold or warm. The rattling noise sounds like metal squeaking.

Turned around and limped home... then half way there the problem disappeared. Completely. Couldn't get it to do it when if I tried. Then this morning... it's back. Intermittent it seems...

Clogged fuel filter from all the crud that's breaking up? I know the IP return line goes back into the tank... have a new fuel filter, going to install tonight. Hard to believe that much of a problem could be caused by the filter. Thoughts?

Ouch that doesn't sound good, maybe its related to what happened to me when the auction screen got plugged?

Search this thread - HDJ81 Fuel suction hose/filter, wow!

I know... I've already read your thread a couple times :)

I just changed the filter (had some extra time at lunch due to coming into work early) and no change. There was some crud in it, but nothing terrible.

I may be barking up the wrong tree though. It may be drivetrain related and a complete coincidence with the diesel clean. While driving down the highway shaking, I can put it into Neutral and the problem stays the same.

That and the fact I drove around all morning yesterday (about 150km) with ZERO issues... (after the diesel cleaning)

After further diagnosis, it appears it's not engine related at all and it's just coincidence on the timing. That means drivetrain. Oh joy... one evil or another. On the positive side, THAT MEANS...

MY SMOKE PROBLEM IS SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:popcorn::popcorn::beer::beer::cheers: :steer:  :D

Mr. Motorvac, I could kiss you....! :hillbilly:

time to convert that puppy to part time.
I did on a few weeks back and it isn't bad at all.

Oh ya? How much that run you? Easy to do?

Didn't run me anything. My friend on the other hand.
$770 for the kit. Some RTV, a new rear output bearing, and an evening of work. Not that bad with two sets of hands.
If you were going to rip into the rear end would you add a transfer case gear reduction?

Yes... I think... but I will wait until I HAVE to get into that. I don't mind the 4 Wheel All Time setup. I mean, it'd be NICE to have the ability to go into 2WD, but... I don't need it. I can wait ;)

Update: Ok, so here is an interesting observation. The Cruiser ran beautifully for nearly 2 weeks, no smoke - ever - even at ~0 degrees C on cold startup. One nice afternoon I was doing some stuff (not engine or fuel system related) and added the usual amount of Diesel Fuel Supplement | Canadian Tire to the fuel tank.

The next evening I started her up, and wow - the crappy white/blue/grey smoke was back, just as bad as before. I then immediately took her to the local Co-Op gas station and filled with diesel to help flush out the concentration of fuel additive in hopes this would clear it up. So far no change, but I've only put 200km on since it started having an issue again. If not adding the fuel additive clears up the smoke, then I won't be adding it again. Especially since the results from http://www.johnfjensen.com/Diesel_fuel_additive_test.pdf show that 2% bio diesel had the best performance of lubrication over all other lubricants, and I believe Canada has at minimum 2% bio diesel in all fuel suppliers? (pls correct me if I am wrong)

white smoke = lean burn

Just to throw another thought into the mix, a diesel mechanic explained to me that on a diesel, white smoke is actually a sign of running lean (can't say why, but somehow affects proper combustion). Black smoke is a sign of running rich, which is unburned fuel. A gas engine might be different, cause I also thought that white smoke can indicate excess fuel in the form of vapour, but apparently not on a diesel engine.

My experience also confirms this: I had a white smoke problem with my Isuzu 4JG2, worse when cold and started hard. Got the point where the engine would hardly start, would idle but not rev over 2000RPM and certainly had no power to even go 20km/h. After hours of work to eliminate a fuel/air/exhaust restriction or timing issue, I got the injectors rebuilt and it cured the problem perfectly. Lesson learned: Injectors have a LOT to do with fuel combustion, or lack thereof.

I also have a 1hdt in my 80 series cruiser, and fortunately no smoke issues at all. I sure hope I won't have to rebuild those injectors any time soon.

And to answer your question asutherland, I highly doubt that Cdn diesel has 2% bio, here in Ontario, any station that has bio in the diesel advertises it, and there are very few of them. But could be different between provinces. Could you be thinking of ethanol in gasoline? I've often seen on the gas pumps that it says "may contain up to 10% ethanol".

All Canadian diesel is mandated by federal legislation as of July 2011 to have a minimum 2% renewable resource: Biofuels Mandates Around the World : Biofuels Digest

Most local stations in Winnipeg have signage at the diesel pump indicating "may contain up to 5% biodiesel". No mention of minimums.

Well, it's been 2 months and several tanks of diesel later, and the problem is still there. I haven't added a single drop of the fuel supplement since. I also paid Mr MotorVac another visit, and we redid the whole purging process. This time however, there is no change. It's as bad as it's always been. :crybaby:

Not like this.

Anyway... local shop is going to check my 1st stage and nozzle tips. They said if it's smoking badly at idle, it's the 1st stage and/or tips, not the 2nd stage. They can rebuild the first stage, and/or replace nozzle tips.

They charge $10 / injector for testing them. Figure it's worth it.
