If it is a split case then you have to split the case and then remove another 3 or 4 mounting bolts on the front half of the case to remove it from the transmission.

Have Fun,

I don't know, a land cruiser that can jump might be cool. I am sure Kurt at cruiser outfitters could come up with some sort of OME suspension that could handle it.

The crome is a good idea.

Ha Ha, yeah that would be funny, an FJ40 hoppin' on hydraulics with lots of chrome an bling bling and maybe a chain steering wheel too. :D

Don,

Was wondering if I could use my current trans and tcase to do engine mock up? Its going to be awhile before I can get an H55. If I get 69Ramblers (Dustin's) adapter plate for the H55 will it work on my current trans and then just switch it off to the new one when I get it. Getting some steel tubing tomorrow for an engine run stand. Will post up pics when I get it all welded up. Thanks again.

Hi Bluehawk,

I think they are the same length as long as your tranny is a later one with the spacer (late 85' to 87'). I would confirm that with Dustin though.

Don

Thanks Don, Sent a PM to Dustin to double check on that. I also got a reply from a guy in Canada about me wanting to buy a HJ61 air cleaner like the one you put on your motor. Do you think one for $75 is a good price? New to all this cruiser stuff and don't want to get ripped off due to this fact. THANKS

Ryan

Bluehawk,

That is not a bad price. $50 would be better, but as hard as they are to find these days, I would probably buy it. I ended up using just the top of the HJ air cleaner and the bottom of an early 80 series bottom half because of where I mounted my power steering reservoir. I know that Doug720 and Dirtgipsey are both using the complete air cleaner housing from the HJ on their 60's with the Isuzu diesel so it should work without any trouble.

Don,
Do you happen to have a copy of the 4BD1T service manual? I think that I will need one when I go to replace all of the seals and such. Plan on doing a little painting on the engine also. Just let me know if you have a copy. Hope you don't mind me asking a lot of questions, I'm using your build as a guide. It is a filled with knowledge and insight.

Ryan:)

Hi Bluehawk,

Go to the diesel specific section and there is a link in the manual section stickys at the top. That is where I got mine from. The manual is too big to send through an email. You have to download a torrent file program and then download from the link on that page. It takes a little time but it is worth it.

No, I don't mind questions at all. So many people helped me do this swap that you can't imagine.

How did you remove the camshaft in your 4BD1T? Mine doesnt seem to want to budge. Any tips or hints? Right now, I am pulling it with my hands; I want to pry it (sort of) but I dont know where to pry it from without messing it up.
Dazed

Never mind. Apparently you have to rotate while you pull. Wish I knew that a while ago!

And for the future, if you remove the oil pump drive gear from the side housing cover, the camshaft just pulls straight out.;)

Don

Yeah, I had that removed....the pull and twist worked. Now I just need to pull the liners. I think 69rambler is making a kit that can be passed from person to person with the next one paying the shipping.

Was it just suction from the oil and stuff holding the camshaft in? I didn't mean to imply that you were doing it wrong, just that there was more than one way to skin a cat. After reading my post it seemed a little condescending and that wasn't at all how I meant it.

That would be nice if there was a floating puller for everyone to use.

Have fun!

Don

Absolutely did not see it as condescending! It was good advise. I had gotten through that part of the manual already. Yeah, I think it was the suction.

Do you have any advise for the puller?

Hi Dazed,

The pullers are all pretty straight forward. It is just a screw down the center to a disc that pulls out the liner. Just keep plenty of lube on the center screw and it will pull them right out.

When you put the new liners in, you just put the liner in the freezer for a while to chill it and it will really help with the ease of installation.

Do you have the markings on the top of the block for liner fit? Just make sure you get the right size liners or it will be a major pain to get the new liners in if they are too large and if they are too small then there will be problems down the road. Most of the aftermarket liners seem to be a #2 fit. Are you going with aftermarket liners or factory Isuzu?

Don

I will check for the markings on the block. I bought a Rudy rebuild kit since I heard good things and I haven't really heard anything about an Isuzu one that is complete. I havent opened or done anything with the kit yet, so hopefully I could swap out liners if needed. I managed to put the block on the engine stand with the weight not evenly distributed, so I need help rotating it back upright.

Do you know what the numbers on the bottom of the lifters mean?
