Did I just blow my engine?

I thought I would post an update. I’ve been working on the new engine since July, when I have time. Almost ready to set the new engine on the engine mounts. Pretty nervous that it won’t run the first time cause I’ve screwed something up. I also know I didn’t take near enough pictures. Guys take as many pictures as you can at each stage, then take even more.

The new engine is in the foreground and the old engine in the background. Once the new engine is installed and running, I’ll rebuild the old block. I’m pretty sure it was just the cam bearings that spun, but I don’t know that definitively yet.

great work, it looks pretty! I see your tranny cooler hanging by the soft lines as if you plan to reuse them. I would strongly recommend against this and suggest you replace all those transmission soft lines.

Nice work the tranny and t case look super clean! Make sure to dump some oil Down the oil filter inlet (to the left of the big brass screw/nut the filter screws onto) to help prime the pump! Also filling up the oil filter and screwing it on will help. Super excited for you to get that low mileage cruiser back on the road!

Ok, likely final post in this thread (maybe). The new engine is in, runs great. I had to pull the injectors after the initial start up as I had pinched an O ring on the re-install and it leaked. I also had electrical issues with the headlights and horn, turns out sometime in the past an aftermarket alarm system was installed, I pulled that crap out and problems solved. So as of now it’s all done.

Thanks to FJ80Oregon for the new engine and the help along the way

As far as what was the initial cause of the failure, I don’t know for sure. Four of the 6 bearings on the old engine had spun, the other 2 were good. I don’t think it was the filter, the engine had been worked on in the past, my mechanic buddy thinks the previous owner knew there was an issue and dumped it before it blew. I probably will never know. I’ll rebuild the old engine, the crankshaft and block are not affected, so it will be an as new long block when I am done.

I’ll post a list of everything I replaced and where I got it for others reference. I pretty much replaced or rebuilt everything on the engine.

Congrats on that endeavor, on to 2025!
