haha :D

I just need to play with fuel mixtures on a nice day when it is not raining :D

Thanks again man!

No prob, but another note get that over the the line-up-shop.

Also, she was a bitch!

Also can anyone tell me why the lower hole is there?

ugh...

went to the gym...

was back firing loud ( ears ringing ) and cutting out while not quite warm during acceleration.

When it was warm, kinds surging while in slow acceleration...
muted / crackle / muffled popping ( maybe that is a missing noise no idea ) while steady or slow acceleration... like muted gurgling hesitation, fxxxing weird to describe.

has new coil , points / condenser.
maybe the plugs are fxxxed ?

or do I just have an exhaust leak off the manifold?
I am starting to hate this engine.

Thanks Shane!

Beast actually has power :D
And starts immediately :D

So how much driving between ^ and now? Maybe your distributor wasnt tight and moved timing? Plug wires correct/crossed/fell off?
Usually its something you've just worked on so trace backwards.....

The engine is a stellar workhorse.....just need to work out the "put back together" bugs......

Drove like 20 minutes, then parked.

Hour later I went to the gym

ugh yeah, i dunno, I will look at it tomorrow

Yeah The engine is great, but there is a damn ghost in the machine, And i want to trace it down and stop it.
I hate the feeling of , oh it's fixed, oh it's is not.

No disrespect to Shane btw, he helped me in a pinch and kicked ass :D
what am i doing wrong Shane?

There is something that is just not right going on with my engine.
And I hate not knowing what is going on. meh

oh and i just quit smoking so ya guys take it easy one me :D

I used to smoke 3 packs a day.......I quit when I had to pay 5.50 pack in Maine.........Get a rock, keep it in your pocket and rub it instead of smoking.......

Go buy a timing light....Easy to use as a flashlight

These rides are the same as old VW's in that the best mechanic for them is the owner......

The points are fine to continue using.....If you do go with a pertronix or other, wrap your points/condensor and keep it in the glovebox so when the electronics fail you'll have a backup......

or

Just keep the points.....adjusting them isnt hard.....Its been driving with points for how many years? you get the point.....no pun intended.....

I know you get frustrated but you'll have a great sense of pride when you drive it and can tell by the sound that its perfect or if something needs attention......and it will need attention.....As long as you drive it, it will have things that come up on occassion that you might not consider routine maintenance, etc....

I'm going to bed now......get the light.....

Go take it down to some local mechanic who can't spell dynometer and tell him it is running a little rough - he'll have it up and running (or at least found the ghost) in no time.

Wish I could be of help - my advice if you are going to solve it yourself (and has been a winner throughout your build) follows Bill's advice - go back to the simple things one at a time - process of elimiation. I know "about as useful as a ash tray on a motor bike".

Cheers Dobster

Thanks guys

I hardly knew anything about mechanics until I bought this rig and started redoing it, So I am still learning.

Shane and et al know their stuff, no question about that, it is just something is not right, i dunno what but something is wonk... Everything they did made it better; timing new coil and points all made it better.I feel that there is just something else messing it up

I will buy a timing light tomorrow, and read more about adjusting points tonight,

I remember shane saying to replace the dist top, maybe i do that tomorrow along with fresh plugs and see if i cannot figure this out.

All i know is something keeps going wrong, like something that is causing all the other bits to foul up, I jsut do not know what the hell it could be.

thanks for the smoking tip as well :D

Are your plug wires new? Wet non-new wires can cause tons of weird problems.

I dunno how old they are.

I can replace em tomorrow.
I think if they were worn the tech would have mentioned it though...
But who the hell knows at this point hehe
I guess I will replace it and see if it is better.

Can fouled plugs be fouling the points?
I replaced the plugs recently, but maybe the bad points fouled them.
ugh

what plugs did you put in there? this engine needs the short ones. pic?

manual says hesitation on acceleration could be leaky manifold gasket, bad compression head etc...

is back pressure and popping on the exhaust sound like this?

meh i get a fresh start tomorrow and try to figure it out.

tomorrow i will:

1) replace the plugs again

2) replace dist cap and wires

3) by a timing light and see if I am smart enough to work and recheck the timing

4) see if i can set the check and set point gaps if they have become out of adjustment again...

5) have someone align the front wheels

Questions:

A) Do you set the point gaps before setting the timing yeah?

B) How can I check for exhaust manifold leaks?

C) What do you clean plugs with? or should i replace them ( they are 7 days old )

Sorry I had a freak out earlier, quitting smoking and unresolved engine problems are not the best combo for me :D
