Make sure the pin that holds the float isnt binding or in wrong...(I acknowledge the fact there may be no "wrong" way).....I want to think I had a problem with the pin once and had to take it out and put it in from the other end of the assy.....basically swapping the 90 degree bend in the pin from one side of the float to the other.....I don't recall exactly what it was but the pin was a problem.....

hmm I will give this a try.

I would like to know more info on why and how, and how to prevent a needle from sticking.

I don't recall what was going on with the pin in mine but I want to think the 90 degree bend was hitting the carb casting keeping the float from moving.....I reinserted the float pin making sure it had plenty of "free area" for the 90 degree bend.....It was an odd thing I thought....

hmm damn

oy at least I kinda know what is going on now, but alas , this is retarded :D

I want to sort it out, I have taken the top of the carb off like 40 times trying to figure out why it is sticking heheh

ok headed back down to see if something is jacked in the needle seating or the lil bar that holds the float.

I will be at my shop, if anyone has a eureka idea that can fix it call me at 415 999 3513 :)

what is doubly weird is my carb does not have a STRAINER screen on that top bolt above the carb...

mine doesnt either......Extra protection for back in the day when fuel filters werent so wonderful and gas wasnt as clean maybe.....

Just keep an inline filter on and you'll be fine.....

needle seems to be moving free and easy...

Must be the float catching up, or the metal rod that holds the float in...

oh... is there anything else that would cause this?

I mean, it runs prefect idle.. float stays constant... then you drive it or get on it, and the s*** never comes down to the line in the glass window, but fills to the top of the carb fuel bowl and then it sputters and dies at idle :(

Sounds like you just need to keep bending the tab on the float and find the sweet spot your float needs for that carb......

well i an set the float and at idle it is champ, float says perfect etc.
( set flaot measurements per manual )

It stays dead on the site glass line.

But get on it drive it a few blocks, and it jsut sticks up ( or something does ) and the site glass just fills to the top and does not go back down to the site glass line....

Am i doing it wrong?

Is there a spring under the needle?

Id there a diagram I can look at?

yeap spring under the needle

I do not have the books with me, but it seems correct

circular shaft screws into the upper housing, a metal square with a point goes in up, the a spring on the under neath and a small screw pin goes into the spring.

crappy cell shot of a drawing

That would be correct......so it idles fine......drive it a block or rev it then it sputters like its out of gas but the bowl is full?

Debris/junk/trash may be keeping the needle from seating properly....very possible since you're getting the system going again....

I'd imagine you've checked that though.....

yeah, idles great at start, rev it up and drive it, runs perfectly when your on the throttle, but when your off the throttle, basically the float does not go don the the site glass line as it should, so it is chock full of gas and sputters :(

could be, i noticed some fine sediment in the bowl when i opened it...

maybe i shoudl clean the bowl out and put an inline filter right before the carb?
Might be an easy way to check for this...

It wouldnt hurt....mine did the same thing couple months back....exactly.....I cleaned the carb with air....new filter.....a little float adjustment and it was fine.......put on a new VR as well but thats another story.....

definitely make sure your bowl is clean, and that the fuel passages are clean. My 40 would die coming off of highway rpm, but would idle perfect too once I got it started again. Bunch of sediment in the bowl would get sucked in and block fuel flow. Sounds like you're on the right track, and FWIW I've heard of people running two filters for a while when they were getting something going again that had been sitting/they had been working on for a while...
