Nice pics Destin!

Any news from the body shop?

What about your fan...are you going to swap it for a safer plastic one? Not hard to do once you have all the parts...it's on my list!

Lots of threads on this as a few of the older metal fans have snapped

Might be a good time to do it, if you decided to, as your tub is not ready yet

Thanks man :)

Still waiting on the body shop :(

Good idea about the fan, i heard a few horror stories about them breaking!

looking good...you need to paint the fan :D

hehe yeah :)

I have all new stock hoses coming in the mail for the radiator, i figure i will do that all at once time :D

Took the horn button in to be re chromed.
Was gonna have the hubcaps stripped, dents removed, and re-chromed, but they were saying like 300 bucks a piece because of the dents, to rich for my blood :D

I guess i will have to wait till Eshans hubcaps are ready to get a dent free sent :D

Not to disagree on the fan, but these things just don't grenade for no reason. They fatigue and come apart. Cracks radiate out from the bolt holes and are usually plainly visible. If you don't see any, and are still scared of the fan, take it to a machine shop have it bead blasted and magnafluxed. Just my opinion, but at this point it would be a shame to stick a PLASTIC fan in there.

If you need some pictures let me know, I'm sure we can dig up some examples of time bomb fans. Which reminds me, have you replaced the timing gears with steel? Much easier now than when its all back together.

I would rather have the original fan in myself, but I have not found a place that can properly check it for any hairline cracks, so I might have to go the plastic route. I am not there yet, but when I get there, I am going to see if I can have mine checked to make sure it is up to snuff...always had the original steel fan in my 442, and never worried about it.

$300 a cap :eek::eek: This must be the same guy that was selling those $400 caps on ebay a month ago. Try and fix the ones as best you can, and keep an eye our on CL to see if anything pops up...might be a really long time before we see any new ones.

they look great....looks like a perfect addition to destins rig :)

speaking about grenading fans...i have a 74 ...and had a plastic fan...it hit the shroud and blasted thru the radiator (bad motor mount).....soooo.....with my infinate wisdom i said....i need a new motor mount as well as a metal fan so it will hit the shroud and remain intact because its metal right

it lasted 1 year came apart and also blasted thru my new radiator

I got a NEW plastic one :)

but....destins should have a nice orange powder coated fan...his rig is nice...mines a....wellll....lets just say...its not as nice :D

i thought the timing gears were steel on the old f motors no?
would be good to make sure it is all tidy :)

thanks guys :D

the current fan blade has no visible cracking...
could certainly use a nice paint job :)

thanks for the chrome link, i see what they have to say :D

having the horn button done for 30 bucks right now :D

yeah.. full engine rebuild while you're in there

...on Destins 40 I would never chance the fan for a plastic one, if his fan runs fine is in a good shape I would use it.
If not I would search for a steel one or would someone put a plastic part on such a engine?

We are all welcomed to our own opinions. I would prefer an original metal fan if I could be guaranteed that it was perfectly safe.

Destin actually uses his rig a lot. His will not be a Sunday driver like mine will be...or many other older cruisers are. So, unless he can get it tested properly to be sure that it is 100%, and considering the amount of driving he actually does, then I see no problem with a newer Toyota fan.

Destin...have you asked your bodyshop where you can go to have the fan checked out? I remember seeing this done with some type of dye once the metal is cleaned up as Jim noted...those hairline cracks really show up with the dye if there are any....just make sure you keep the old parts you might remove if you do this...you know...for those days you enter the old 40 in a white glove contest :hillbilly:

the more I look at this, the more my fj45 looks like crap.

my fan is OEM, but was inspected and rattle canned black. Same with my starter. And my valve cover is silver. Oh my.

I do have a spare fan, and you know after sand blasting them, it is quite apparent if there are cracks or stresses. You can use your knee to flex the blades and see if there are any fractures in there.

second rate, but still a good mate,

dallas
