Defroster vent location

Since I am stranded at my house on top of a hill due to flooding, this would be a good time to do some cruiser stuff. I have all the fittings for the dash heater/defroster vents that blow on the doors. Question, does anyone know how to measure the proper hole location? Thanks in advance.....thinking of moving to arizona where it rains a lot less!!!

I did this to mine a few years back and don;t recall exactly how I located them. I am pretty sure I looked at pictures of others truck that had them, held them in position with the doors on the truck and looked what what behind as to fine tune the location. Drill away!

As I am about to do this as well I am following this and probably it's me but I can't tell from the pics supplied where the vents are and where you drilled to locate them. Got any pics that are a little more clear. Thanks,

No I don't. There really isn't too much flexibility on where these go. My two most important suggestion are

1. locate with the doors on the truck
2. be certian of what's on the backside B4 you drill.

This is a .00001 banana job, really.

Oh, and should it matter these really don't work worth a sh*t so don't get your hopes up too high that they are going to solve sidewindow defrosting issues. AC and a much more powerful blower fan are the two best alternatives to maximize benefit.

I disagree - mine do a fair job on the side windows - helps that the 2F runs hot for sure.

The positioning on the photos above is a bit lower than stock, no doubt to allow for the windshield knobs, which are not there on the 40s with the window defrosters (standard bolt instead).

Good point about the height limitation with the windshield fold-down knobs. Without them should gain you what, another 15-20mm? I can't see how this would make much difference but I will never know because I'm not about to cut new holes! I have always used either my left sleeve or an ice scraper as the driver's window defroster.

Ok guys,
here is my issue on this. Where I'm at, Central America, the rigs did not come to this market with heaters and defrosters built in. As such I'm looking for some photos of not just the defroster vent placement for the side windows but for the windshield as well. Also any shots of the duct work under the dash would be great. I have looked at the blown up diagrams from SOR but it would be great if I could see it in a photo as well. Also none of the rigs that are here have any of this on them so I can't crawl under the dash and get a direct eyeball on this stuff. I would have started a seperate thread but this one seemed right on point.

Don't have any of those either.

Planning and prethought are to be commended. However IMO, you are making a much bigger deal out of this than it really is. I like to think that what I give up in patience I make up with above average intelligence and mechanical ability.... it really is not that hard. I had no drawings, pictures or even the internet (thanks Al Gore) for that matter when I did mine. Just a box full of used dirty platsic parts.

Look, position, consider possible problems/interference issues, look again, close doors, look around again, open doors, mark, drill, install. Hook up tubes, stand back, drink beer and admire handywork. Next project.

From pics in your ROTW, you got all kinds of options and are not limited by silly things like a dash, lower dash pads or a front cage.

I'd look at positioning it to best aim at the window while taking into consideration of the location on the dash where the air inlet supply fitting finds itself with respect to anything that gets in the way: light switch, anything behind the dash, etc

Remember that prior to drilling, check all clearances again while sitting inside with the door closed!

Wait, looking at that pic again of your dash I see you have AC. The only thing I will add is that you are going to have to look and plan where the feed tubes come off that unit. You may have to extend the hoses or get creative with your hose routing to make a nice clean fit. Now we are in an area that only you can determine what to do. I have never seen a 40 with AC other than in pictures.

I would think that mounting the little side window vents on your dash would be the least of your issues. Maybe not a bog deal but I have no knowledge of your AC system and how it is ducted, flow path, etc. You may be better off to contact whatever company made your unit to see what they recommend.
