Well i just bought a BJ40 yesterday. :bounce:
I've been looking for a BJ42 for a while, but the few i looked at were pretty neglected and asking a for too much money in my opinion. I went out and looked over this 79 BJ40 that come up for sale a couple of days ago and put a deposit on it right there. I was after a 3B, but this engine is basically the same albeit a bit smaller capacity and no piston-skirt cooling. I was never going to turbo it anyway so it doesn't matter. It was originally an old guys truck, that he bought from new, and he owned it for 28 years before the PO bought it off him. He has kept a service record from the beginning writing down everything he has ever done to the truck and any money he has ever spent on it. It makes for good reading! The PO has kept the book going and wrote everything down and kept all receipts! There is also a Toyota B/2B engine manual to go with it.

It's only got 185,000 km's on the odometer and the diesel is in great condition. The only aftermarket addition to the engine is a CAV fuel filter cartridge setup. The PO installed a new 2" lift with new leaf packs/greasable shackles and EFS shocks. It's also got a set of 33" cooper STT's on white steel wheels as well as 5 original skinnys. He has resprayed it a dark grey colour late last year as the original tan/beige paint had minor surface rust in places It actually looks pretty good and drives great so i'm real happy! :D

I don't pick it up until next week, but here are a couple of teaser shots...

congrats..looks great on the splits rims....my opinion

Haha, I agree the skinnys look best! It has a set of four of the Cooper STT muddies, but they were his "play" tyres. I'm going to run the skinny tyres mostly. The PO started fitting rubber flare stripping to the guards, to cover the mud tyres because they stuck out a bit, so i still have to finish fitting them. There is also a full roof cage coming with the cruiser that bolts to the sideboards at the front and the rear bumper at the rear. I'll definately post up some decent pics once i pick the beast up!

I'm really excited that i will be only the 3rd owner of this cruiser so thanks guys for the congratulations!

nice catch! congrats!! Is it me or it looks like you have a rear full floating axle?

All of the Aussie 40's, BJ and FJ are full floater rear axle.

Nice Find ! ! ! Looks like there's hardly any coast cancer

My 40 "Kermit" was originally a 1979 BJ that I bought in Brisbane and shipped to South Africa
I have subsequently chucked the B diesel anchor in favour of the bulletproof (1978) 2F

Congratulations! Nice find. Wish my Canadian '79 BJ40 was in as good a shape as that. I have been running 12.50x15x33 tires for about 25 years but the next set I will keep the same diameter but go much skinnier.

By the way, the blue truck in my avatar is not the '79.

Nice find! Congrats!

Agree with the Splitties. Either those or 33's and bigger!

Is the inside still beige??

Alrighty, i finally picked the beast up on the weekend so here are some better photos! The drive home was fun and she sat at 100Km's/hr on the highway fine. It is noisy and bumpy, but damn fun to drive! :D
I got her home and dumped all the oils and replaced all the filters. I don't think the diff or gearbox/transfer case oils had been changed for a loooong time, as they came out in terrible condition. Fresh oil and filters were fitted all around and now i just need an excuse to drive it!

on the way home...

I actually don't mind the rack now. Looking back through the receipts, the original owner paid $160 for it back in 1980!

The PO did a great job on the roof console....

The mighty B diesel. It's tractorish but reliable! :steer:

Bit of an update...
I had the 40 up for sale because we were moving house. It was listed for a week before i cancelled the sale. I really did need some money for legal fees etc, but instead of selling the BJ i got a personal loan. :grinpimp: It will just fit inside my new places garage so i'm going to hang onto it.
The :princess: actually talked me around to keeping it! She said it made us both happy, so we should keep it, because finding another one like it would be impossible. Happy days.

Anyway i pulled the roof cage off in preparation for it's new home...

I fitted the rear-wheel carrier. It's in dire need of a refurbishment, but it will do for now.

I also pulled the rear diff center out and took it to a diff specialist to go over it. When i bought the 40 the oil i drained out of the rear diff looked like a chocolate milkshake, so I'm guessing it got water through it at some point. The diff whined on overrun and i figured i should get it looked at. Turns out the gear hardening on the ring-gear is wearing and the hemisphere is cactus. I don't know how long the water was in the diff before i bought it, but it seems to have taken it's toll. I'm getting it all reconditioned and having a detroit locker fitted at the same time. :D
I figured while it's out getting worked on i may as wheel lock it. The hemisphere needed replacing anyway so why not. We'll see how it goes anyway....

Nice looking rig. Yeah, they sure are a blast to drive. Wandering steering, bumpy ride, but they are a rugged looking machine, and that's in a cool way.
Any plans on mods? Can't wait to see more pics.

So, time for a bit of an update.

I recently sold my beloved turbo-diesel 80 series. I basically wasn't using it for what it was built for enough and it spent 3/4's of its life either parked up at home in the garage or sitting in the carpark at the airport. :frown: That was my 2nd 80 and my ultimate 80! It did everything we asked of it very strongly and took us everywhere we wanted to go. It was comfortable, powerful and pretty fuel efficient for a 2.8T 4wd. In total there has been at least one 80 in my garage for the last 5 years and it was very, very sad to see this last one drive away. The BEST vehicle i've owned easily, hands-down. :D

So with the mighty 80 gone, i paid off some bad debts and now i have a little left over to throw at the BJ40. Thinking about how good the 80 was just reminds me that the 40 is totally opposite. The 40 has one thing the 80 did not have though, and thats character. My :princess: and i just love to get around in the 40. :) It's cool in a slow kind of way, haha.

The 40 was developing a coolant leak and it was coming from between the thermostat housing and the block. I tried to seal/retighten it without success.
In the end i thought buggar it, i'll refurbish the entire cooling system and tidy/paint things as i go. One thing i learned is that it is super-easy and a bit addictive working on these old cruisers. Everything is easy to get to and laid out where it should be. :)

When i pulled the radiator i discovered that one of the side plates had broken all it's welds and wasn't holding the radiator at all. My guess is the stiff suspension and diesel vibrations took there toll on it.

I got in and started to clean the engine and engine bay down just by hand. I went through a lot of rags and a lot of "wax & grease remover", but in the end it cleaned off a lot of the crud that was covering the main parts.

The rocker cover took a lot of "elbow grease" but it came out looking great. I like to check it out each time i open the hood. :hillbilly:

So easy to get to everything with all the ancillaries removed....

Great rig! I wish mine was a diesel.

I feel ya on the 80 as I know it would be hard to let go of mine and even harder for my wife who loves it dearly. But, I agree with you that the 40 has enduring character and appeal that pushes aside modern practicality. I think you made the right choice .

Keep us posted.
