I much prefer my 99 '4r to the 80 for DD and trip duties. (that said I will keep both)

I had a 97 4runner with a 3.4, auto, slight lift, skids, sliders and 265's on 4.30 gears, my current 80 series is a 93, with sliders, about 2.5 inches of lift and 285's on stock 4.10's. I find more interior space to be nice for a daily driver (though not necessary) and I like the seating position of the 80 better, but I'm a small dude. Driving wise, the 4runner was superior in almost every way; less noise, 'lighter' feeling, rode better, and was more fuel efficient. The smaller size was easier to handle, though I don't think the 80's size is difficult to handle

I've driven both trucks long distances and despite the differences, the 4runner was better for me. It seemed better at running higher speeds (70-80mph) was more fuel efficient, and seemed to handle crappy highways better. With that being said, the difference was as astounding as I thought it would be, and I really love driving my 80. I do really miss that 4runner though, it was the perfect combo daily driver/wheeler.

I went to a 2005 4Runner and I've had a 98 and 2000 in the past.

As long as you aren't too big for the runner, you'll have no problems with it on road or mildly off road.. unless it's rusty.

My fiance had an 01 4runner, limited trim. We currently daily drive a '97 LX450. On trails, the FZJ80 takes the cake, easy. On road, the 4runner was a bit nicer to drive and it was a bit more fuel efficient. Overall, a great vehicle. If we had both in the garage, I'd probably opt 4runner for longer road trips and daily duties.
