True, thats about the cost. I went through my mechanic/parts house (mark up) plus I got red "Porsche" boots (heavy duty/$50ea) on the the inners because of the 'extreme' angles... Even the standard boot in black on the outer looks longer than OEMView attachment 1269324
I'm curious what is the black on the axle?

Do you have part numbers for both extended boots or where they can be found. Seems like an improvement over the OEM's.

Don't have part numbers. I only asked for a heavy duty inner boot (red), the outer (black) is just what they used when rebuilding.

@2001LC - Not sure I understand the question. It's some sort of coating, I guess.

The coating looks like paint in picture, which I'd not be wild about on axles. I can understand CVJ not wanting newly cleaned parts to rust, but paint on axle!

Are these them?

High Angle Inner CV Boot - Products - Off Road Solutions

Tempted to get a set to try...

Says they fit: 96-’02 4Runner, ‘95.5-’04 Tacoma, ’00-’06 Tundra, ’01-’07 Sequoia.....anyone know the dimensions of our CVs, offhand?

Also, @gwatts how are yours holding up?

I read a review on a 4Runner forum that said he'd gotten the red silicone boots from CVJ and that they deformed at high speed and rubbed something which caused them to leak....

They look the same. Not if that is what CVJ used or not.

As for holding up, looks like there is a pin hole that is leaking at the bottom of boot...going to take it this week and see what the story is.

I actually have a set of these in my garage that I bought for my old 4Runner but never installed... should I see if they can fit the hundy?

What do new OEM CV's run? I trashed a 3 month old Import Direct last weekend. I junked my old ones. Wish I would have researched this before. The CVJ rebuilds look like the way to go.

Do we know the measurable differences between Tacoma and LandCruiser shaft diameter, and the inner and outer shaft diameters??? I'm wanting to see about using the boot above, but can't find the dimensions to compare. Also interested in these if the Tacomas won't work.

When I rebooted a CV, I compared the 100’s boots to the 4runner/Tacoma boots that I also had in the garage. Unfortunately they were not the same size, not even close.

I can get a pictures of the boots next to each other for a size comparison later today.

Don't bother with anything else than OEM Toyota boot kits. Those silicone boots dont last as long as OEM according to CVJ. @ $40 +/- each side they come with grease, correct sized clamp and new axle locking ring. The boot material is proprietary and extremely durable. If installed correctly and with the included clamps, your good for at least in the next 100k+ miles.... unless you catch a boot on a rock or debris.

Just want to add a +1 for getting OEM boots. I installed a replacement axle from Detroit Axle in December and saw it was spewing grease a few weeks ago. It has some sort of aftermarket boots on them.

The other axle I had ordered at the same time didn't survive shipping, one of the boots on it had a one inch tear along a seam.

x2, yep, got a Detroit Axle one, and it was a POS. It was spewing grease right after installation. Don't recommend them at all.

Anyone using these Cardone axels? Limited Lifetime warranty.

Last time I was at dealer they mentioned i needed new front axels and quoted me $1,100

The Cardone are new Chinese axles. I have tried several sets of the WorldPart ones, they are great for the first couple months, then they start knocking and vibrating and making all sorts of wonderful noises. This is one area that I would go new OEM if you can afford or just reboot used and hopefully you have decent splines.

Yeah I have no desire to replace OEM Japanese quality with Chinese quality.

So what do I need to do to determine if I actually need new axels or just new boot kits?

As the local Toyota garage said I needed new front axels at $1,100.

I see guys are saying there is a clicking sound if new axels are needed. I havent noticed a clicking sound of note on my vehicle. But other than that what am i looking for to determine whether I actually need to replace my front axels?

If the boots are torn and the shop saw grit/road debris mixed in with the grease they would be concerned. If they had any idea about drive flange to outer CV joint spline wear and this was evident, then they would have concerns.

Have you spoken to the shop and asked why?

What problem did the shop explain with the axles that required replacement?

Keep in mind that shops live by revenue from doing recommended services. Is the boot(s) leaking- torn- noise? Not a lot shops will mess with rebooting or clamping a leaking boot- they’ll suggest to replace. Find out what the problem is and then decide.

If you replace- ask for Toyota OEM not aftermarket, ask for your old axles back too, if you dont reboot them yourself, someone here will want them to reboot.
