ok i had to bail on signing up. need to pick runs for thursday thru saturday. They have them listed on web site with descriptions and requirements. assuming we want to wheel together we will need to pick same runs so post up want you want to run. limited amount of spaces for each run so hurry up

I didn't pick any group runs, I figured that would leave it up to us to decide what we want to hit, and when. I'm not opposed to doing any of the scheduled runs, especially San Rafael Swell, or Kokopelli Trail, but I kind of like the freedom of winging it, or planning our own runs.
Although, I can be swayed...

Thoughts, people?

Let's congregate at the same end of the table as last month during the meeting. I probably can't get there much before 7, but as long as everyone goes straight to the table instead of jabbering in the parking lot, we should have ample time to make plans. We can also talk Moab from 7:30-til meeting called to order. Let's just make this protocol until the Moab trip is over. Club members involved in Moab sit around the west end of the meeting table. I just realized we are all gonna miss the May Meeting. Should we make a motion to bump the meeting back a week, so we can rub it in how great Moab was right after we get back?

a question for those of you looking to fly out , where do you fly to ? Salt lake is the closest but is it the best way to go ? I'm trying to get some of these details together and it just keeps leading to more questions. I'm hoping to drive out and then fly back making it a little more confusing but i think its what i want to do.

I'll be there early probably around 6:30.

No idea really which airport makes the most sense. We just need to make bookings together to make it much more logistically coordinated.

when we register, do we all have to enter the same trail run schedule or is there a better way to register as a group altogether wheeling together?

I strongly recommend you reach out to Rising Sun to discuss options for freelancing. The Park Service frowns on large groups without special permits in some areas. Rising Sun spends serious money and a great deal of political capital to get the required permits for these runs. If you plan to go off on your own, better check with the hosts so you don't queer it for the rest of them. As I recall from conversations I heard while at Cruise Moab 2014, groups of four or more trucks could present a problem, but that might depend on where you go. You can always go over to BFE if want to freelance, but you'll pay a fee to play.

My recommendation is to view this trip as an off pavement sightseeing tour with some distance between obstacles, more so than a challenging wheeling trip like we are used to in the East. Because of the scenery, every trail is a good time, regardless of difficulty. Fins and Things is an easy, but unique experience that you should try if you can. I'm fairly sure that a permit is required for that run because they only allow a limited number of vehicles into that area. There are some really challenging trails but you probably do not want to break your junk out there because the distances between camp and the trailheads can be 20 - 70 miles. The damage I saw was due to a rollover, and some busted birfields and axles. I think some steering studs sheered as well.

I'll bring my Moab Trails book to the meeting. The trail descriptions are fairly reliable.

We did Fins & Things, Elephant Hill, and Sevenmile Rim in 2014. They are rated as Difficult, but they are on the easier end of the difficult trail list so I doubt anyone in our club would use many of the bypasses (sometimes you have no option). We were lucky and it was dry. When wet, I'm told the carsonite makes many of the trails really treacherous if not impassable.

Most of the damage happened on the Poison Spider Mesa, Pritchett Canyon runs

I'm flying into Denver. I'm not much of a fan of Salt Lake City. Denver is about a 5-6 hour drive from Moab but it's a really neat drive for those who've never been through the Rockies. Flying into Grand Junction is an option but more expensive and adds at least one additional layover to your flight plan. Grand Junction is about 1 -1 1/2 hours from Moab. I'm getting a rental car for the week at the Denver airport. Haven't decided yet what day to arrive at Moab- I'm not going on any of the overnight trips offered for the earlier part of the week so may not get to Moab till maybe Wednesday. It's all up in the air for me in that regard right now. At least I'm registered and know what trails I'd like to run! It will be interesting to see what the discussion at this week's meeting turns up.

United has non-stop flights into Denver at reasonable times and good fares.

Talk more Wed, but my gut is we should all just fly into/out of Denver. Try and get as many guys on the same flight both ways to consolidate rental cars. I would also expect we can have Chris meeting us at the airport at the tail end of his journey in my taco, so that eliminates one rental car.

That sounds dangerously like the start of a plan! I like the idea of keeping things simple.

I will be at meeting by 6:30 also. Study up on the guided trail rides in case we are required to do them or we could just steal the list from Gary's post.

Frontier flies out of Reagan direct to Denver for very cheap if you don't check bags. I'm actually flying out there Thursday and my last minute ticket was only $179 each way. I assume they're cheaper if not last minute. I do like the idea of driving out and flying back. Is one way truck shipping an option with the group? Or I wonder if shipping from Denver might be cheaper since it's right off several freeways.

It's only because Jim wants to ship out and not ship back. I'll take the spot he leaves open and we can split cost. Sweet idea right

Okay, then we should definitely pick trails.

I'm totally flexible in this department. Will you guys be making trail choices at the meeting?
