Sounds like a story there...

I've always needed cable going up White Knuckle Hill, I've almost made it once, but almost doesn't count :frown: No chance for my truck if there are no rocks in the hole at the bottom of the climb. And it wasn't a crawl thing, either, it was a bump thing. The hole is up the hill in the first picture, where everyone is standing. Coming down, as I said, not much room for error.

My strained relationship with 'Behind the Rocks' comes from trying to drive up the obstacle called NoseDive or HighDive. Tried the right side, and it wouldn't bite. No problem sez my spotter, we've got plenty of space, like 5-6 feet, backup, reset, we go over to the left. That was all cool, but the '6 feet' part of the deal only applied to 3 of my tires, and not to the right rear.... Next thing I know, my left front is coming off the ground, and I remember looking at the rollcage and thinking 'Well, this thing better hold, because she's going over...". If it weren't for 3 guys on the left front corner, I'd have a K5 buggy right now. Now believe it or not, just before it was my turn to try NoseDive, I had found a penny in the dirt, down in the wash right below the obstacle. I shined it up and threw it in the center console, for good luck :D. To this day, I firmly believe it worked very well... I still have it, in the truck.

Now, this may all be different in an '80, and I've never tried to drive DOWN either NoseDive or White Knuckle Hill, and it may have been just a bad day, or I can't drive, or whatnot. I'm not trying to talk you out of a challenging trail. All I'm saying is that the way MY karma feels, I've got other trails to do next time I'm in Moab...

P.S. I learned later that my spotter for that day thinks that if the Adrenaline isn't still running high a week after you've come home from 'wheeling, you just haven't had any fun at all...:D

Should be fun-fun-fun!

There is a vehicle inspection and registration necessary before hitting the trails, if you there on Wednesday it's best to get it done then and beat the crowds. In the inspection they look for problems and rate your truck for the trails, then put a colored sticker on your headlight. The sticker tells trail leaders, gunners, spotters, etc. how capable your truck is at a glance, so they can make informed decisions on how to spot you, recommend the bypass, etc.

Some of the problems and equipment they look for are; Service and emergency brakes, on the 80's they just check that the pedal is firm, the pads have good meat and the E-brake is properly adjusted, 8 clicks on the handle or whatever the max is in the FSM. On earlier trucks they check for them to be able to stall the motor in gear. It may seem extreme, but once you are on the trails and see the angles that you are driving and sometimes parking at, like pointed off a cliff, you will see that good brakes are a good thing! :D

All trucks must have a coolant recovery tank, the later trucks have them stock, the early trucks need to have one added to reduce the possibility of puking coolant on the trail. Doesn't need to be elaborate, saw a couple booty fabbed on the spot last year, water bottle (IIRC needed to be a quart+) and zip ties.

Leaks, nothing can hit the ground while your in the inspection booth. Minor leaks, seeps will pass, but anything that looks like it will drip needs to be repaired before hitting the trail.

You must have proof of vehicle registration and liability insurance coverage.

Last year they required a fire extinguisher and first aid kit, they just asked if you had them, didn't inspect them.

They give the truck a good once over, tire tread, lights working, fan belts, seat belts, etc. So if you have any obvious problems it's much easier to fix them before leaving home.

In the inspection they aren't looking to disqualify anyone, pretty much the opposite, they will help to fix any problems, but it's much easier to have it right before you arrive. The inspection also finds reliability problems and groups trucks on trails by capability leading to smooth enjoyable days on the trail with a minimum of "we need to rebuild his truck" or "we need to strap him again" delays.

I should be signing up within a day or two...still trying to finalize my copilot. Should have the rear bumper on by then...I hope... ...

Is the Monthly meeting this Friday? I would like to sign up, would I be able to at the meeting?

Yep, the meet is a good time to sign up! The 80 shells are on the truck, in transit, unfortunately the 100's weren't done in time and will ship in the next week or so.

I just signed up for Cruise Moab...Mostly 3 and 3.5 rated trails...I have a little concern about my 99's sketchy front diff, so I will stay away from the tougher trails but maybe I'll lock up the front before I go...(I bet my wife says no)...

The latest from CM07 staff, as of 01-27-07, 05:34 PM.

151 trucks registered so far. 24 spots left

This is the fastest January we have had

I have registered, finally got my act together

Thursday1: Golden Spike
Thursday2: Fins & Things
Thursday3: Hells Revenge
Friday1: Metal Masher
Friday2: Kane Creek Canyon
Friday3: Porcupine Rim
Saturday1: Poison Spider Mesa
Saturday2: Cliff Hanger
Saturday3: Metal Masher

I have a special request in for the Saturday 'Spike run - I might have to flirt with the man who builds the schdule :D

If I get the wish, then I'll go for Fins&Things on Thursday (or something else....)

I really didn't like the trail leader for Steel Bender last year - they did not know short wheelbase vehicles  if they have someone else this year, I could do that trail again
