well I topped off again after driving a little over 100 miles just to see what I did wrong or whatever....

this time I got different results....
trip odometer 119.3
filled with 8.84 gallons
13.49 mpg's

still don't know what happened the first time round, maybe I got the wrong receipt. either way i'm happy with the 13mpg's

I once got 17mpg going 50 mph on the freeway from LA to Pismo Beach following a FJ40. Stock tires at that time.

Slow gets good mileage. With a SOA and 35's I don't even try to calculate my mileage. I think I get around 9mpg....

I work for the fire dept. we all are pranksters. Anyways one of the fellas gets a new car, says it's getting terrible mileage, I tell him it has to break in, fast forward 2 months and every time he came to work I put a gallon in. He was so excited about the mileage he was getting, but to finish off the prank, I pulled out a gallon every shift then he got terrible mileage! Moral of the story, firemen are skilled at the prank. Know any firemen?

I agree that you should be happy with the 13mpg. The window sticker was something like 11 city / 14 hwy and that was a lot of wear and tear ago.

I'm a fireman as well and I do agree about the pranks....

When I was in college we were all supposed to take turns driving over to the chow hall--we lived a fair bit off-campus--and one of the guys was always "out of gas, I'll drive next time." We figure up what he'd use in a week if he drove and siphoned double that off. Not sure we ever told him. . .

large AC duct-type zip tie tight around the drive shaft of the offenders vehicle- and admit to NOTHING before they take it to the mechanic...

11.2 gallons isn't even half a tank.

Check your math, your odometer cable, your blood alcohol level, anything else you can think of. I assure you, you aren't getting 19+ MPG.

responding to 11.2 gallons isn't even half this thread.
check your reading, your pages, your blood ackohol level, anything else that might get you to the end o this thread...I assure you...:p

I did around 19 mpg in Yellowstone two weekends ago. No joke.

Desmog'd 62, H55F. Averaging around 45 mph Id guess

Front driveshaft. ;)

I checked mine yesterday. 12.8 mpg off the GPS mileage. Mixed town and highway.

In another note, FJ60s have a 22 gallon tank. I always thought it was 20, but yesterday I was called out to pick up a friend unexpectedly and forgot I was gonna gas up. Noticed on the way home I was bouncing on the E peg. It took 22.054 gallons.

when people get too far off from 13 mpg I start looking into my crystal ball. :)

now seriously... the other part is mileage is not worth measuring unless you do it with real world driving....not driving where it takes you 50mph max or two days to accelerate and you never apply the throttle over 20%

fill up gas tank to max......drive over measured course or known distance...don't depend on old school odometer, refill gas tank to max (note how much gas it takes to make this 2nd fill-up. Do the math...total miles divided by known gas quantity which will = approx 13 mpg.

Another thing to note if you come up with some crazy gas milage figures.....you can go look at the OEM new car price list/label that came with the car (the thing glued or taped to the window or windshield of a new car)....right on that it states HWY mpg...something like 13.5 mpg.

Its a brick with a very inefficient carbed inline 6 pulling a heavy 4 door suv with 4wd and no overdrive...all that adds up to is low double digit mpg.

You can use the 'old school' odometer if you calibrate it against known mileage. Incidentally, I got all this from my hs math teacher middle boy so you're not relying on my imperfect skills.

Find a mileage marker on your local highway. Set odo to zero.
Drive 10 miles as measured by the mileage markers.
You could drive any mileage but 10 seems right and proper.
At the end of the 10 miles note what your odo reads.

Say the odo reads 12 miles. That means it's reading over actual mileage.
To correct, divide actual mileage, 10 by indicated mileage 12 which equals 0.833.
Now multiply odo mileage by 0.833 which in this example = 8.33 actual miles traveled.
Now divide 8.33 by the fuel used and you have your mpg.

Say the odo reads 8 miles. That means it's reading under the gas mileage.
To correct, divide actual mileage, 10 by indicated mileage 8 which equals 1.25.
Now multiply odo mileage by 1.25 which in this example = 12.5 actual miles traveled.
Now divide 12.5 by the fuel used and you have your mpg.

Once you get the correction factor by which you multiply your indicated mileage, write it on the windshield in dry erase marker so when you change your tire diameter you can change your correction factor as well. Or you could write it on the sun visor. Just remembering that number is right out. At least for me.

Or you could just use the mileage the GPS says you've gone which seems a lot simpler.

Cheers.

Pretty sure it's 23.8 gallon (90 liter). I know I've put a bit over 23 gallons on fill-up once, that was cutting it a bit close.

my properly tuned 2f with all the egr stuff intact and running just as it should would get 16 mpg's on the highway. Now that gasser is gone and my poorly tuned diesel 2h gets about 17 mpg's. Well, not poorly tuned but over fueling ...
