Couldn't pay me to get a 3FE but it looks clean:

I’m gonna go take a look at this. I’ll let folks know how the overall condition is. I’m liking the idea of the solid front axle for longevity. Is it worth switching over to an 80 from a 120 just for that solid front axle but losing the V8?
We don’t do much driving so it would mainly be a grocery getter once a week and an off-roader.

Edit:
I thought id go look at this because it looks like it’s in great shape and I’m a sucker for the white ones but did a bit more reading and yeah- seems like a newer 80 would be the smart way to go. Is this still the general consensus or is there something to be said for the good condition of this truck and the price not being too crazy?

Advantages of a newer FZJ80 over this FJ80 being
  • Rear axle changes to full floater with disk brakes when equipped with ABS
  • Also gets viscous coupling HF2AV transfer case versus
non-viscous HF2A transfer case for drum braked 80’s (and fj80’s)
  • 1FZFE motor power increase

    Etc

The engine would be a deal breaker for me. I just wouldn't get one with a 3FE. I had one in my 62, and while a solid engine, the 1FZE is a big step in horsepower and technology.

I have also owned a 94 and a 95 FZJ80, and I would steer towards the 95-97 80 if only to get the transmission which is much smoother.

I'll let others speak to the axle and power difference.

Thanks for the insights here. I think I’ll be able to look it over tonight. Hopefully I don’t fall for it without at least taking it on the highway. I think GW parkway should give a good feel for it’s on road manners.

I have a 91 FJ80, I could drive it around the beltway okay. It's not a race car, but I didn't find it unbearable. I've never wheeled it off road though. So, I can't comment on the off-road-worthiness.

Anyone have recent experience getting a car loan for an older truck? Any recommendations for that?

This summer, I had a deal in place to sell my '93. Then the guy comes back to me and says he needs to get financing. I didn't even waste another minute and put the rig right back on the market. There was no chance he was going to get a note for $25 or 30K (regardless of credit score) from any traditional lender. Needless to say, he couldn't and it took another couple of weeks to find a cash buyer.

Not saying it can't be done, but I think you're going to be looking at collector car financing or some sort of note secured by other assets. I could be wrong.

Hoping it shouldn’t be too hard at the under $10k price point... PenFed maybe?

PenFed is a good option. Also Navy Federal doesn't care about the car or mileage... at least they didn't when I got my loan for the 200. They never bothers to ask me what year or anything it was until after I got the loan, then they asked what I planned on buying.

I got a loan from Navy Federal for an 80 series land cruiser I was going to buy. It was super easy! The vehicle had over 200k on it. Navy Federal didn't seem to care.

For that price you shouldn’t have trouble finding one with a 1fz in decent shape
It was a nice truck overall. Wasn’t the smoothest idle I’ve seen... but I’m not sure how smooth a 3FE is supposed to be. Passed on it for now.

Then you have to install it... including engine mounts etc...
Better off just finding a '94+

lightstream is the way to go if you have good credit. I’m not even sure why it’s called an auto loan. They don’t care about value and a lien is never recorded on the title (also convenient when you decide to sell it). Rates are great, 60 second approval, all online, pick a day to receive the funds.
