Cracking/Popping Noise (1 Viewer)

I recently replaced my head gasket and performed a provisional valve adjustment as per my haynes manual. I went ahead and adjusted my ponints gap and my timing. When I set my timing to 7 degrees BTDC it started making cracking/ popping sounds. It then billowed a little bit of smoke from the carburetor which smelled like burnt rubber


If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Could the popping sound have been my valves hitting my piston since it was only a provisional adjustment.
