Is anybody noticing the body cracking in a similar area? It’s happening on both sides.

Ditto: seems to be a common issue but the crack in the photo above is longer than I've seen on three other 80/s. For a quick fix I've sanded down to bare metal right at the crack, applied (using a Q tip for example) a rust killer like OSPHO to any area that's pitted or edges you can't sand, then primed and painted. On the inside you can reach up to the backside of that crack and apply your favorite rust-stop followed by something like 3M Cavity Wax to slow down corrosion. Body shop repair might get more involved.

🤨 never seen that.
Going to make me get off my ass and see if mine’s doing that.

I’m going to say not as it’s happening to other members and I don’t think there wheeling as had as we do 😂

The crack seems to be due to ?? metal fatigue first, then the rust. If you look at that area it appears it's been stamped out of one piece of steel with some acute angles than add stress from flexing of the quarter panel, rear door closing, etc, etc. IME it does seem to be more common on the left side however.

IDK if a couple of small tack welds in that area would help, or a small brace welded behind the crack, but getting up in there might be difficult??

Yeah I assumed the rust happened after the crack formed. I was thinking about bribing a friend to rig it with silicon bronze it and hope that’ll hold it together but let it flex a little

It’s all a catch 22. if you weld it it will burn all the paint off the inside and cause more rust.
Luckily my lives a sheltered life inside so the rust doesn’t look so bad. And why I haven’t noticed it.

ute chopping it will fix my issue

Yup. Some vintage 10+ yr old threads discussing the same.

Mine has it too. Actually has had it since the day I got it with zero offroad time, bone stock. CA/NV truck its whole life. It's super minor but in the same exact spot.

Maybe clean up the rust and just throw some touchup paint over it and call it a day. Should last another 50 years lol.
