What brand band saw you got there Ed?

Now that's real nice Ed, Like the contrast. Sharp eye there grant but that theres a drop saw migaw. Anyways, Ed, next time you take pictures of your engine paint job, hide the latex house paint can. And nice shot into the cylinder heads, good ABUNDANT overspray into the combustion chamber. I myself use old spark plugs there feller been. Too each, their own.

Well, it is a bandsaw:confused: Were you thinking a recip? I like latex paint, and I want everyone to know about it:flipoff2: I did have old spark plugs in there when I sprayed it. That is just clean casting you see.

Methinks you took offense at my comment about your choice of engine color. For that I apologize.;)

Can't wait to see you do this stitching job...

Ed

I need to put lots more smiley faces and ha has into my stuff. Totally having fun with you Ed, no offense takin at all. I mean, if you wanted to really be mean you could have compared my paint to someones out there (remaining nameless, TH) Now see, the counter quip about the latex, thats my kind of snipe back. Na, on the recip, another playful jest, ya those are bandsaws, machine shop slang "drop saws", correct term is "cutoff saw" me thinks. Let me see, more wit? samples, OH, so thats what a clean casting looks like. I just use more paint, looking to see if STP makes an engine paint. Paint and repair, all at the same time, wahoo.

layout blue

I used layout fluid and a magnifying glass. Glad I did. Traced a fine crack I hadn't seen right up to the boss. Locknstitch recomended a crack penatrant for this.

Centerdrill for drilling

I used a small centerdrill to make the start points for the drilling operation. i only cener drilled enough to leave a small dimple. Locknstitch definiteley did not recomend this step.

Drilling the first hole

Sooner or later you just have to do it. I used my 4" adjustable square base to help eyeball my drilling to perpinicular. I used the # 7 drill LnS sold me.

Tapping the block

I used a water soluble tapping fluid. Hand tapping as shown. I found this step to be no big deal. but, of course I've done this before. I cleaned with a brake cleaner and air. No kidding, worries of breaking the tap, completeley unfounded, easy. Just took care to align the tap, appropriate pressure, done.

Driving the pin

I poured LnS' thread locker into a cap, dipped the pin into it and then drove the pin. First by hand then using a nut driver. Finally finishing, driving the pin home and breaking the head off using a 1/4" drive rachet. That easy.

One fawking hole? At this rate it will take you 6 more weeks! :flipoff2:

So what was up with the valve lash instability? I noticed you took the head off.

Speeding things up

Drilled a series of holes and then drove the pins. The picture shows a problem LnS warns of. I stopped driving this last pin because the pin shoulder stopped on the boss before seating. I will have to grind this area of the boss. before driving the last pin

Hold on there, jeez, give a guy some time, had to pour another eggy @ rum before posting this last thread. The valve lash thing. Looks like ol IDave called it. Valve guides. I'll be catching that thread up here real soon.

Curious on the progress. This is a great thread, I am bummed as I have thrown away a few good things in the past that I'm now sure could have been fixed had I had this information. Well... it is now locked away in my mind for future reference.

Sorry to hear about the tossers, hard to believe this product is out there. Know what you are saying about the having no idea this was out there. If it weren't for Pinhead and Mud, I would not have had any idea, would have had to yank, weld and rebuild or as the voice of reason suggested (probably the sanest cheapest route), find another runner and replace. As far as progress goes, I've been squeeezing this project in between life. Needed rig bad for work coming up but life changed, Went over to borrow engine stand from B.I.L., Sis and B.I.L. offered their Jeep loaner too. Bless their hearts. So now I'm going to finish the stitch Sat.. Plan on installing engine next weekend. Will post as progress permits. Stay tuned for the dramatic in the engine bay pressure test. Pucker factor 9.5!

Grinding the riser

I used a grinding wheel on my 4@1/2" angle grinder to grind this casting riser. The skirt of the riser interfered with the skirt of the LnS pin. I then retapped the hole. Checking that the pin set flush before driving the pin_head off (little ha ha).

Grinding the pins

With the final pin driven for the first set it's time to grind the pins. Do this to allow flush access for the next set of pins. Finally, I found a real drag of an op for me. Ok, first 30 seconds of grinding and I was done, no ear plugs, run and get. one loud op here folks. Second, limited access with the head bolt boss and the others combined with safety instead of reading glasses and well as you can see, I hacked this one up a bit. I used a 4" steel cutoff on the ol angle grinder. SnL made this part look easy.
