Coyote(s) attacked last night

Sorry to hear about the loss of the dogs, as I cherish mine like kids, and couldn't imagine having to deal with the sight of them half eaten. But in my opinion it is my responsibility to keep an eye on my dogs around dawn and dusk so they don't get attacked. I will add that my whole yard (no fence or wall) is one of the "highways" that all the critters use to access the valley, I get bobcats, coyotes, and anything else that wants to come through and as a dog owner I have never had an issue, but living in the desert, city or not you have to understand that we have wildlife that is dangerous to humans and deadly to animals. Remember the goat in Jurassic park? (On a much smaller scale) Thats what a little dog is in a block wall backyard, just a snack for a larger predator (that can jump said wall).

Pretty rare unless they have rabies.

I'd have to agree with that too. I lived over by Oracle and Magee on the foothills of Pusch Ridge up until 6th grade and I had to walk to the bus stop in the morning. On the walk, a wash crossed the road and I used to always see coyotes and javelina and other critters in the morning. None of them ever posed a threat to me, at least I never felt threatened. They are more scared of us then us of them. But once you add rabies into the mix, be best to stay away.

Thanks guys, was just wondering?

Was thinking if they'd go after an animal, what might they do to a child in a pack?

I don't think there has actually been a documented case (unless rabid), but could be just a matter of time..

We deal with all 3 (with an occational rabid fox). Unanimous; Bobcats are cool, they do a good job at keeping the bunny and packrat population in check, an occational chicken, barn cat, and don't bother the pooches or kids.
Coyotes, IMO, don't discriminate, and would rather take down a slow easy domestic meal than a wild one.
Ironically, loins seem to prefer the smaller chihuahua sized dogs and leave the larger breeds alone. But bring on the worry, because of recent reports of human encounters.
Oh, and the Javelinas, just outright hate any canine (and I can attest can rack up a heafty vet bill). I think this is due to coyotes history of making fud of their little ones.

Coyotes killed that skinny 19 year-old Canadian folk singer back east a few years ago. In Nova Scotia, maybe?

I'm a bit mixed on topics of wild animal attacks. smaller nuisance's such as coyote's were once very timid of human interactions, especially if they were shot at/killed regularly by ranchers. since we've found them to be "cute", and have people in our very neighborhoods feeding them or permitting them access to their yards without harassment, they will continue to be less weary of us.

I live out on a ranch and see them every day, my dogs chase them out of sight regularly. If I see them I get after them by ALL MEANS! I have neighbors who have bleeding hearts who would disagree I'm sure (that is until it directly affected themselves, isn't that always the case?). when I lived in CT, we reared rabbits, and on occasion they would get tampered with. when this happened, someone had a late shift, and the problem would disappear for a few months at least.

On the flip side I blame the people who not only allow this but who feed into it. with the few bear attacks that Mt. Lemmon was faced with a few years ago, I wondered how "that woman" who was reported feeding them out of her backyard was not "dealt with"?

we've grown accustomed to having "someone" take care of us in many ways. sadly this is just another example

My house backs a natural wash that the yotes use as a hiway. My Boxer is mostly an outdoors dog. She will harrass them as they pass our yard, ut I've noticed on at least 3 occassions within the last couple months that they are becoming more bold in the amount of time they will spend directly behind our house... watching. Unfortunately I have people who live dirctly behind me on the other side of the wash or I'd simply dispatch them. After reading this story though, I guess that $200 tax stamp seems to be an affordable insurance policy.

you pay the $200.00 tax stamp when you buy a silencer.

It lets the neighbors stay sleeping :hillbilly:

It's a suppressor... and yes, it keeps the neighbors less irritated.:flipoff2:

O.K., alternative is a high power pellet rifle. My friend, a real gun guy (you know the type, sort of like we are about our cruisers, but about guns) has a high end pellet rifle that he uses in competitions. Really expensive, and completely lethal for coyotes under 100 yards. Not that I have personal experience with any coyote in my neighborhood that I called game and fish about and was told that they wouldn’t do anything and I would have to contact an expensive licensed coyote relocation company to have the coyote humanly relocated because he was a registered democrat and it turns out we are not allowed to shoot democrats within city limits when the democrats hold the white house who knew…..:p

Here in Texas we got paid to killem. 2 whole buck a set of ears. Seems cheep right but if you do the call and a red spot light you can get 25 or so a night using 22 cal. head shots. That was a long time ago now it is hogs that we are having issues with. farmers pay good to get rid of them... going this week, gas money to get to az.... Also hang the coyotes up or leave them lie near, serves as a warning to others. they are like dogs they remember.

We saw this guy cruising the Scottsdale back Alleys the other day looking for critters to eat
