Tired of Discount Tire...wondering if there's a recommended shop to go to for tires for my GX.

Tbh. Hit up a Big O. I put 285/70R17 Sailun Terramax AT2s on my GX and they have been amazing
And they are 125.99 a piece. Snow rated, all terrain. I go from my place in Vernon to QC 4 times a month, and where I live is completely unmaintained roads. Does both great

Why? Find yourself out-of-state or otherwise. And it's a little bit of a bigger challenge.

Discount for the united states / america tires, it's kind of hard to beat. They'll match prices and yeah, they may have a couple monkeys working there. But all in all, I think they are pretty good folks. And concentrate strictly on tires, it's not like bigo with various things....and they have an eight hundred number should something go super sideways. Arizona local.

Fair question - balancing BFGs is the origin of some headaches I've encountered in the past w/ Discount (I know BFGs aren't the easiest to work with). I'd prefer to go a different route with another shop and, preferably, "go local" if possible.

I'm not explicitly trying to bash Discount but am interested in an alternative. The "what if" item you note above (out of state, long trip, need help) isn't on my radar as much as it used to be, just FYI.

I appreciate you weighing in!

From a past Discount employee, they do not send their guys to Hunter balancing school. They teach each other the bad habits.

The amount of weights stacked and also placed in multiple spots inside my wheels reflected exactly this....again, not interested in bad-mouthing Discount but 33" MT's are different than run-of-the-mill street tires for mall-hopping. Moving on...

Well whatever the case good luck. Discounts always done me right.

land cruiser phil is likely correct on bad behaviors, in general, since when you get good service, it's shocking..., but that isn't isolated to discount or any other place. Walmart has a big, large foot print. Good to use.

If you're doing any sort of traveling, anywhere, you need a network of reliable cshitt. While, I'll support mom and pop as best, it only works in town. Any travels requires the octopus.

I despise discount tire, but I still use them because they have the best equipment. The key is you have to know how to use a tire machine and balancer better than they do (extremely easy, you just have to care) and watch their every move. Most of the time they run one, stick weights and send you out the door. Alway make them run it as many times as are needed and rotate the tire 180 degrees if its taking too much weight. Also, do your homework on whatever tire you are installing because even the managers there usually don't know what the color-coded dots (usually red and yellow) mean and what to do if a tire is calling for too much weight. Generally, they don't watch to see if the wheel is true either, and I doubt 90% of their techs could explain what road force is or what a torque wrench does. 2 times I did not follow my own rules in the last 5 years - once they destroyed a brand new $3500 set of 37" coopers and method wheels, the other they forgot to remove the old weights and ended up with 36oz on one tire (also 37's) and did not think this was unusual. When picking them up from the store, the first one I touched had a set of triple stacked weights that fell off due to them not cleaning the wheel where they stuck the weights. The kid tried to argue with me and say that the weights laying on the ground had been there all day and the 3 year old weights they didn't remove before balancing were the new weights. He lost, then he tried to say that putting new weights roughly where he thought they should go after cleaning the wheel is just as good as rebalancing. He lost that too, I got my tires rebalanced (the most one took was 3.75oz after) and a refund.

On top of all of that, I don't ever take vehicles there. I have had way too many severely over torqued wheels, snapped studs and cross threaded lugs to ever do that again. This has gotten better since they switched to electric impacts, but I still don't trust them.

I take my beater 400k mile toyota matrix to sams club in Flagstaff. There is a great tech there that speaks absolutely no english, but I can communicate with him far more effectively than anyone at discount tire because he is a professional. It's the difference between getting an espresso from a gray-haired career barista at any coffee shop in Italy VS the same from a 19 year old hungover college student at starbucks who is just there for the tuition reimbursement. Unfortunately sams won't mount whatever tire I want on whatever rim I want for a truck that is none of their business, so I don't use them for any cruiser stuff.

Theis could easily become a fantastic, liquor-fueled, gut-busting rant amongst friends around a campfire anywhere, any time.

There's gotta be a meme for this out there somewhere.

Cheers guys!

I have more good tire stories than most people have regular good stories 🤣

I have had very good luck with Discount Tire in Oro Valley. Other than them breaking my TPMS in the Taco back in 2008 they have been very good to me.

I think think the key is to watch them and provide them with a little help as they struggle with my truck. They always seem to have more fun with a real off-roader and do everything I ask them to do.

The worst thing I think would be to drop off a vehicle and trust them to do the right thing.

Discount Tire just performed a six-tire rotation and balance for my Taco with no drama yesterday.

Things I forgot to mention - always double check the pressure and lug nut torque after you get home!

fwiw, the mcclint store has an alignment rack. Free check. If needed it's like 89 bucks or something. Real rack.
