I have a 1990 3FE powered 62 and i am thinking of maybe selling and getting a FZJ80 and i would like to know the dependability of the 1FZ-FE. I have been on this forum for a few years and i always see and hear about how strong and reliable the 2f is and how underpowered the 3fe but i always hear how they both get lots of mileage out of them as long as you do your routine maint. Now i don't visit the 80 board much since i don't own one so this might of been covered numerous times. Like the 2f and 3fe should i expect a 1fz to last as long as those? Any certain miles i should stay away from when searching for one?

Thanks guys,

jason

This has been covered and covered and covered.....

But in short,
The 1fz-fe was built with a "new" gasket materiel that seems to have a hard time standing up to the heat created between the #6 cyl and the EGR passage directly to the rear.

A new gasket is available, that is up to the task, and once that is done, the rest of the engine is designed to go 300k or more between rebuilds

To which my response on the "gasket" is that if coolant is replaced regularly and the engine is not overheated this won't be as big of an issue. I'm at 220k and mine has not been done. Granted I have a 94. It seems that 95-97s are more prone to headgasket failures. My brother has a 97 at 180k or so and it hasn't been done either.

One problem I see with FZJ80s that is not so much a problem on earlier models is that they are very comfortable to travel in and they have much higher mileage than earlier models. Some of these folks have treated them like a lot of folks treat Toyotas and have not done the proper care. Find a nice one and you could have a long life. Find one that hasn't been taken care of very well and you could have a bumpy road. Then of course their are those freak incidents but those happened with 2Fs and 3FEs too.

Doug's brother in law has the classic exception...

307k with no major maintenance, runs great.

Neither of mine have needed it at 170k and 150k respectively, but I plan on doing it as PM this spring--just because it is convenient.

The 1FZ is great, powerful and reliable. There are probably more HG issues than a 2F or 3FE, but that doesn't mean every 1FZ needs HG work. That is the only big thing that jumps out, other than that, expect to go 300k+ miles.

I would think closer to 500k plus. Upon opening up my 1FZFE recently, there was no signs of wear on the journals, cylinder walls, or bearings. Since it was done at 225k, I was shocked. The fact of no signs of wear at that milage tells me it should be good for twice that, minimum.

Power is more than sufficient stock (210 HP), but the addition of a super charger adds around 100. So with 310, you end up with more (HP) than with a stock 100 series, and a much better off-road vehicle.

I would highly recommend the superior 80.

I have a 97 any the only problem i have had was litting my wife drive it.The only reason they say they are under powered is bacuse they weigh well over 5000 stock and that is a lot of weight. But mine will go it i want it to.

The 1FZ is a very well designed engine with a lot of interesting features, to include 7 main bearings, oil nozzles that spray the bottoms of the pistons, a gear-driven power steering pump, internal oil cooler, 4 valves per cylinder and so-on.

It's weak point, that isn't as weak as we here make it out to be, is the head gasket. Several people here have replaced head gaskets but the nation-wide demand is nothing near that (yet anyway).

Currently out of the over 1,000 Toyota dealers in the US only 26 of them even stock a valve grind gasket set and there are exactly two dealers with an overhaul gasket set and six dealers that stock a loose head gasket.

Hardly an epidemic.

Pard' me CDan, so if I bought the overhaul gasket set from you, does it come with the grind gasket set or I have to purchase it separately?

The overhaul has all the stuff a valve grind does, plus the stuff for the bottom-end.
