This past weekend I spent some phenomenal time with my friends in Mississippi... wrenching, eating, smoking, drinking, talking and making kin-folk and solidifying the notion of "tribe."
The Land Cruiser Tribe.
One of the best and last quality tribes left in this fxxxed up world we live in. Most of you know me as a religious Toyota Land Cruiser person. That is who I am. I cannot do anything about it nor will I ever apologize for my interest in OEM perfection and my interest in making sure that the Land Cruiser heritage remains in tact.
Thank you to
@wngrog and the Cotton Land Cruiser crew for hosting me. One of the best around.
That being said, let's get down to some business that needs to be said at this point because I am getting very tired of having to explain myself to folks day-in, day-out.
I am first and foremost now a CONSULTANT. I am no longer a dealer droid nor am I a corporate droid. I have decided that freedom from stricture, freedom from a "boss", freedom from the monotony of a defined life is WAY more important than a stable check every two weeks ad infinitum.
A lot of people contact me and say "why aren't you answering my email/phone call/PM in less than 30 minutes, or 4 hours, or 1 day etc.?" And most of the time it is in an angry tone or in a tone where they feel that they are the most important person on the planet. In fact, they ARE the ONLY person on the planet that owns a Toyota Land Cruiser and I am the only person on the planet that knows what they are talking about (in fact, this second part is sometimes mostly true... the knowledge aspect of the equation). Most of the time there is a resignation that the person who is contacting me will have to -- GASP-- wait a day or two for me to respond to them. Blasphemy.
I generally retort: "Did you receive my auto response that says 'Normal response time is 24-48 hours in normal situations?" The answer is generally "no, I didn't read it;" Or they don't care. Mainly they want their needs met immediately.
I AM NOT THAT PERSON ANYMORE. I LEFT THE CORPORATE WORLD FOR A REASON.
And I respond: "Sir, I am no longer any corporation's bitch; as such I can do what I please, and I can choose when I work and when I do not work; I can choose when I travel for clients who
PAY FOR MY TIME AND EXPERTISE; I can choose to ignore your email or PM if I feel that the response is not worth the request.
I choose to be loyal to my clients that are loyal to me. They will always get my first response, they will always get "right of way" so to speak. I am of the opinion that loyalty has its benefits in both directions--between me and a client; especially if they have been doing business with me for a long time. And many of my true clients have been loyal to me and I am grateful to them and I will always do what I can do assist them. Anytime, anywhere.
As such I need to also make this clear:
1.
I have no published discount. Just because you own a Toyota Land Cruiser does not mean at all that I am obligated to give you a discount. If you contact me and say " I found 43422-60060 for X $$ on Toyotakissmyass.com and can you match that price?" I will immediately delete that PM or email and I will put you on the "junk email" list for perpetuity.
My retort will be: "Sir, do I come to you and say give me something for nothing? Do I come to you and tell you to give me your HARD EARNED knowledge for nothing, or for a discount?" No. I do not. Any person who has spent their life being someone, being something wants to make sure that they are compensated adequately for their knowledge, for their information, for their ability to be the craftsman they are in their given trade.
I will no longer allow my knowledge to be abrogated to the lowest common denominator just for cash. I just cannot do it anymore. That type of abrogation is what makes everything go downhill and I will not be a part of it. If you want something as cheap as possible, please DO NOT CONTACT ME.
2.
A part of my leaving the corporate world was so that I can travel and interact with my clients worldwide. I want to help them, I want to be around them, I want to meet their families, I want to interact with them in an authentic manner. Yes, money changes hands and yes I am compensated for my time away from the office where emails and phone calls are left unanswered for a few days, or maybe a week.
My assumption is that if you need something right away, or right now, or immediately that I will NOT be the person you contact if I have clearly stated that I am out of the office.
I am one person. I am one person only. Your entire interaction with me is with me only. There is no one else doing what I do. And if I don't know the answer to your question, more than likely I know someone that does, who is also doing what I do , something similar. IE: being an arbiter of knowledge and information.
When you contact me, the entire interaction is with me. From the initial point of contact to when you open your box with your parts inside--that is me. I pack everything. I inspect everything. I drive 50 miles one way every day in ATL traffic to get the parts that end up in your hands. I lovingly touch all the parts. I really do. Those of you who know me personally know that there is nothing more that I love in this world more than OEM Toyota parts.
There was a joke many years ago when I was first working for
@cruiserdan and he was teaching me the ropes about being a real parts guy, he said: "We are the only people for true car guys who are able to satisfy that urge to have something in their hands that came from someone else, from someone just like them; we are able to provide them with the satisfaction of opening their box and seeing everything they need to do what they are doing to their Toyota Land Cruiser."
And there is a lot of truth to that. A lot. And being able to present that as a truism, as a fact, is one of the most gratifying aspects of my day.
3.
I will not be pushed around and bossed around as if I am a fxxxing child. I have had too many interactions recently where people have stated "well, I am going to post up on MUD and say what a bad experience I had with you because I didn't get my $4 widget for a 40 year old truck with 1.5 tons of rust on it in 24 hours." [neglecting to state that they spent 23 emails, 4 PM's and 7 phone calls to confirm that the $4 widget was in fact the widget they needed].
My answer is: please do. Please complain publicly on MUD; please complain and scream and shout and be a fxxxing pedestrian child. Please do. I look forward to reading your experience and I look forward to toasting a beer to your complaint.
Mainly because most of the time there was a situation where communication was lacking. Sometimes it's totally my fault and I man up to that. But most of the time it is a pervasive mentality that inhabits our world, our minds these days that everything has to be instantaneous. Something out of nothing, a reason without a cause, a stratagem without a tactic. I am not interested in these types of interactions just like I am not interested in having sex with the stripper because strippers are nothing but trouble, no matter how much foundation they have on their pot-marked nasty faces.
And anyone who knows me knows that when I am in the wrong, I take care of the situation-- be it sending you the replacement part for free (sometimes 2 or 3 times meaning I lose money in the interaction), taking back an incorrect part for gratis, doing whatever I can to make the situation right. And if you are not happy with that then there is really nothing else I can do. There really isn't. It is glaringly obvious to me that we were not meant to interact with each other in a business manner.
That is the best I can do as one human being doing what I do. And, constantly I have to remind people that I am only ONE PERSON. There are thousands of you all out there. Amazingly enough, that's a difficult concept to get across to people for some reason.
As such, I am going to enforce the following policies militantly from here on out starting tomorrow:
1. I only ship on Tuesdays and Thursdays for all completed/fulfilled orders. If you want your parts quicker, faster, more "Amazon-like" you will need to pay for that. Sorry. That's just the way it is going to be.
2. Any order less than $100 total with shipping will no longer be fulfilled. I just cannot justify spending the time and effort for making $5 on a $100 order. I can't and you wouldn't either because it would be fxxxing business suicide in this day and age. Please contact one of the other supporting MUD vendors and I am sure they will be happy to assist you.
3. All orders must be payed for in advance. I have had too many ass clowns stiff me recently where I am in it for hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars ( and you know who you are considering you are reading this and you are on MUD.... most of them are... Lurking... being nefarious.... being duplicitous ... being a "user" of MUD as opposed to being a part of the community of Land Cruiser owners). There are tons of scum bags out there, unfortunately, and they're here on MUD too.
All of this being said: I am posting this missive mainly to educate, mainly so that you are not let down as a the proverbial "consumer."
I want you to know what to expect from me.
As such, all I ask is that any potential client be respectful of another human being; be respectful of the fact that I don't like phone calls at 2am just because you have my phone number and you think it's ok to call me because your 100 series is making some beeps and sounds and some CEL lights are coming on. Park your damn truck and call me in the morning, please. Because sure as s*** I would not do that to you. Be a decent human being. Privilege has no place in my vocabulary if you abuse it.
Is this a rant? Kind of, yes, it is. Am I out of place for stating what I am stating above? In all honesty, I don't give a s*** if I am out of place.
That being said, I will continue to be a servant to the Toyota Land Cruiser only; I will continue to assist my clients and my friends who own Toyota Land Cruisers. I will perpetuate a respectful development of my tribe. A tribe I love and will honor always with my abilities and what I have been taught by those way smarter than I am that lurk here still on MUD...
As I stated many years ago, "The truth is in the rocks."
Be well and take care of what is most important.
