In the last couple weeks, I have seen many requests regarding what it means to "baseline" your truck. Almost always an excellent answer is given by the forum, but it can be hard to track down all the baselining threads. So having just gone through much of the baselining process, I thought I would put together a list of common PM items in one place with corresponding walkthroughs.

FWIW, this list is not meant to be proscriptive. Only you can be the judge of how much preventative maintenance is enough. However, I hope you may find the info in this this thread to be useful - YMMV.

One wise note on baselining -

Someone who rock crawls all day long in their 80 is going to have much different baselining needs than someone who merely DD's their rig for 300K miles than someone who has a mix of the two to someone who only drives their 80 2K a year.

But in the end, everyone who owns an 80 should take into account the great CDan thread on the "cost of ownership" as well as should determine exactly what the needs of their 80 are.

The philosophical foundations of one's own OCD should be tempered by their ability to pay for it....

Awesome! This definitely should be in the faq....

 Thanks for putting that together.

As a lurking newb... HI to everyone :flipoff2: (I just popped my 'MUD posting cherry, hope it was good for you too  :hmm:):, this is a fantastic thread (but there are so many here to be fair)... I strongly vote for FAQ link!

I'm drooling over a '94 with OEM lockers and ~180k miles (my friends brother owns it) I'm holding out till I can see it over thanksgiving, but at this point my balls are so blue there isn't much hope I won't jump on it ;). So I'm trying to decide what I'm getting myself back into (naively drove a 60 in highskool... maaany years ago ;p) I want the family expedition rig again now for kid, wife and dogs... and the 80 fits that sooooo well! :D I can't wait to dig in and start customizing and modding (you guys are so full of awesomely bad ideas I'm truly in awe and hope someday to contribute my own ;), yes I am a hopeless ADD tinkerer (I think I'll fit in around here just fine!)

Thanks to UC for pulling this stuff together, makes it nice for us lazy folks, err I mean "efficient" folks! Above is just me rambling, no hijack intended... it might have been mr beam or others  whispering in my ear a little as well :D

So again, Hi! and thanks for all the awesome info and discussion, it will make ownership just that much better with this sort of community to bounce around ideas with!

Cheers!
John

welcome :flipoff2:

A couple suggestions:

OEM fuel filter
OEM in-tank fuel filter "sock" (mine was NASTY)
3FE valve adjustment
Vacuum hoses
Large hoses from intake to throttle body (like to crack where you can't see them)

Great idea, this should be a FAQ thread. A proper baseline is the key to making your 80 the bombproof truck it is capable of. These things aren't getting any younger.

I would suggest not just to change dif fluids but to also do a Knuckle rebuild and a front Dif breather mod too.

You never know how a newly adquired truck was maintained by the PO.

Ask me how I know..

Glad to say I have just done most if not all in the list... except for the Fan Clutch Rebuild... next on my list this week...

While I like the idea of a list like there, I think there are too many variables to really make a list like this.

There's a lot of personal POV's that will probably disagree with what you have above here in the list....just as an example, I think using synthetic anything is a waste on these engines/trannies/xfer cases/diffs. But that's just my opinion based on research that others have done (cary/Raventai) about how these things really do wear down over time (or lack thereof).

Then there are things that could be added but are mainly "while you are in there" types of OCD things for people.

Anyway, the intention is good here but I'm not sure the results would be best for everyone or what one wanted.

PS: Though, I do like the parts source. ;)

I figure if the previous multiple owners didn't use synthetic... why should I... Any potential "extra" wear has long happened a while ago.. Most of these trucks are 175k miles ++ Realistically, I think a good number to shoot for is 300k... anything beyond that is pure speculation.. I don't think synthetic will make the difference between getting there or not...

I have taken a completely low budget attitude towards my 1994

Purchase price $1750
Radiator/Injectors/PHH at Safari ltd $1400
F&R diffs, transmission, transfer case by me $75
Front End service $350 by me
Oil changes for 135k miles (5k intervals, $500 in oil, scored 18 oil filters for free)
Total so far $4075 = .03 per mile + gas

I love the 80, love its capabilities... but can't rationalize "investing" in synthetics... I can't imagine that it would make that of difference at this point. BUT if I could get 135k miles for my "investment" I would be estatic...

I feel ya Beno. I really wanted to collect the how-tos on the most common baseline components all in one place. So many threads get lost, even great ones, ya know? And one of the most frustrating things over the past 8 months of ownership has been tracking down all the things I wanted to baseline, both WHAT they were, and HOW to do them.

As a newb, when I showed up, people simply said "baseline" with no explanation attached. I hated that, so bad, but it made me really good at searching.

And just to make a point - I am running dinos across the board as well. I actually like changing my oil...but im young i guess

Been running synthetics since my 12k service. Makes me feel better.

That being said, I would never even bother switching to syn on a used vehicle that I have no clue what the service history is. And I totally agree with BENO, I too have the OCD and there is a few more things that I would add that others find no reason to change.

Maybe a good way to split it up is:
•*College Student Baseline
•*Blue Collar Baseline
•*CDAN is my personal lord and savior and his dogs MUST be fed, Baseline

You've done a really good job here Taylor with your links though...don't get me wrong. I'm not at all trying to bash the intent--a very good one indeed--I'm just saying that people have different needs and different MO's per their own vehicles.

Someone who rock crawls all day long in their 80 is going to have much different baselining needs than someone who merely DD's their rig for 300K miles than someone who has a mix of the two to someone who only drives their 80 2K a year.

So what you guys are saying makes huge amounts of sense (and what i hear is "make your own decisions, there is no one PM recipe for everyone")... and agreeing with most of the logic here, and after pondering a little more... i think the biggest thing i appreciate about this thread is the list/links and how to do it... PM can be a little daunting at first (especially the "why"). Having the list of suggested PM from guys who have been there and done that and broke this and failed that, for myself as you have all said, to DECIDE for myself the value of it (and I'll admit to a bit of paranoid PM OCD tendencies in my other vehicles and such)

speaking of cost of ownership... as i cure my rectal cranial inversion and realize where Cdan is... he is too close to me to not feel the gravitational pull on my wallet, getting lighter... gdi   i wish i never knew.

Stop by and say hi some time--

And, bring your wallet!

Definitely seems like overkill to me to replace some of these items for no reason. Maybe just inspect them or something. Why replace the valve cover gasket if it's not leaking? I can see changing the fluids in the engine, transfer case, transmission and diffs. Inspect the air filter (if it doesn't look dirty why replace it?). Inspect (or replace if really hard to get to... don't know I'm working on doing some things on this list myself) the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor button. Inspect the belts and emissions hoses. Grease chassis fittings. Can't see doing anything to the starter as PM . Inspect brakes. Really can't see pulling the throttle body to clean it either but I can see that over some of the other things.

I appreciate the links and already have a list of threads bookmarked to refer back to when I need it but doing some of this stuff as PM just seems crazy. I'm trying to decide whether or not to do the PHH since it seems to be a potential unseen problem. I have about 125k now so what do you think? Not trying to sound like a d*** if that's how it comes across.

yep bmac i think you are onto what the OP and beno have been getting at... and the majority of the wisdom i am taking from this good compilation of threads by UC. "YMMV, here is a list of links to things that are considered by some to be PM, some might be necessary and some may not. People's POV wrt to PM varies and it's up to you to do what you feel you must..."

I have not gotten the links together for how to do what if you need to, and this one will go in the bookmarks for my start, thanks again UC.

love the discussion and reality check, especially for an enthusiastic newb like me

oh yeah beno, thank god american toy is NOT on my way home... :D i'm sure i'll end up there soon enough ;)

Great thread, I've been reviewing the baseline threads the past few days. And this brings them together well. Thanks.
