Actually, it's SOB hill.

Should be renamed to WIP (Walk-in-the-Park) hill. :D

Are those full-sized Suburbans that routinely take visitors to Devil's Kitchen going over E-Hill or through Bobby's Hole?

Graham -

I suggest you get with Jon and reserve another spot -I don't know which one would be best.

In order of preference, IMHO:

#1: Nice alcove site, though probably not as nice as #4, but won't have the lookie-lou traffic. Close to pots. I have always stayed in this site.

#4: Pictographs on the walls in this site. Great spot. Everybody know about the glyphs. Close to pots.

#2: I think this is the other alcove site. Nothing wrong with it.

#3: I believe it's #3 that is not an alcove site, but along the side of the wall. Exposed to the sun in the morning IIRC.

There are two chemical toilets. One between #1 and #2, the other at #4. All sites have a picnic table. All sites have great views.

There's a shot on the HDC video on the website that has us driving through that notch on the E-Hill trail. I can't imagine a Suburban going through it.

Jon,

What do I do to reserve a site?

I think the wider vehicles like Suburbans and Hummers go around to the West. The 2 times I did E-Hill we went in through the notch, then out on a trail to the West. My mirrors were folded and I had about 1" on each side, plus I got up too high on the left wall and it was really creepy.

Go to these pages for information. On the reservations page scroll down and open the reservation form PDF. Print the form, fill out the form, fax to the number on the form. In a few days they will send you your confirmation. THIS IS NOT YOUR PERMIT. You still need to pick up the permit when you arrive during business hours. As I recall you can reserve a site up to two weeks before your visit.

You mean "Walk In the Moab Park"?

I just talked to the KOA in Moab - it looks like they have plenty of room now, but since it's a 3 day weekend they may start filling up. The have little cabins, tent sites, and RV spots.

Then again... Shawn just let me know there was discussion about Pack Creek campground as a home base while we're there:

Another topic for tomorrow...

for my vote- i HAVE to do Behind the Rocks again! i've only been on it once. a word of warning to those that want to do it with me...i will be doing most of the obstacles forward and then backward for added challenge. and if i do it, i know at least someone else will probably try it too. it may take a little longer than it would for a straight through run. :grinpimp:
for info, when i ran that trail, the group i was with (a CM run) did this too. at least 5-7 rigs trying everything on nearly every possible line. we were still out by late afternoon. i won't take that long.:D

i am willing to lead anything for a tough group. i've been on almost everything over a 4 rating except Rusty Nail (and upper Helldorado:eek:).

keep in mind the area at Helldorado as a play area. everything from easy to OMG in a small area. maybe on the way out from Behind the Rocks. it's right across the street from the entrance/exit.

Shawn,

There is a run called "Tiptoe Behind the Rocks". I've heard that's kind of adjacent to Behind the Rocks and rigs can go back and forth from one to the other if they are nervous about a particular obstacle - in other words are there bypasses for the harder obstacles?

there are bypasses on all of the harder ones. but there are some ledges i remember coming down that don't. a rear bumper on anything longer than a short bed minitruck will drag. i.e.-FJ60 or 80. i don't know how "Tip Toe" ties in. i do know that a few rigs bypassed White Knuckle Hill by taking a side trail out about 1/4-1/2 mile before it. actually they looked at W.K.H. and went back to it. Tip Toe may be new since i ran the trail too. this was back at CM'02. can we contact any of the Rising Sun guys that may know? James B, do you have any contacts there that would know?

Just FYI - Ellen and I have booked a "kabin" at the KOA for our Moab home base. We will be checking in on Thursday evening, October 4th and checking out on Monday, Oct. 8th.

We are planning to rent a car for Ellen once we get there (NOT a J**P!), so she's not stranded when the boys go wheeling. I'm sure she will go on some of the runs, but not all. So if any of you other ladies are planning to be at the KOA, there should be some transportation to go to town, hiking in Arches, etc.

i just sent an email to KOA-Moab to find out if they have a group camp area (for tent and RV mixed)or if not, if we can give a group name and individuals request to be in the same area as they make reservations. this last one will also depend on tenters taking a "water and electric" site most likely. the regular tent sites are off on one side. when i find out the deal, you all will be the first to know.:D

also we have a suggestion on making our dinners pot luck. Wendy is working on a plan for this. possibility for every night, one night?

KOA

Ok, here's the reply i got.

We do not have a group site that includes RV and tent sites. However we will be glad to work to keep your group close together. If your families do as you suggest and give us your group name we will put you together as much as possible.
Reservations can be made by calling 800-562-0372 or at http://www.moabkoa.com
Please contact me if you need more information.
Thank you. Lila Moab KOA

i will call and give High Desert Cruisers as the group name. if you tell them you are with High Desert Cruisers, we will be closer together. just realize that cabins are in a slightly separate area and the plain tent sites are in a different area. that is no problem if you want to do that, just realize you may not be directly next door to our group. there is a map of the grounds on the website.

Shawn

FWIW. The kabin Mike M stayed in was right next to the RV sites.
