So, a thing happened today...

Papa Smurf has been running a bit hot (it's not even that hot here yet) so I brought it in to my local Land Cruiser shop in Mesa (Avid Cruisers) and got a bad diagnosis. The engine has a head gasket leak and the bottom of the motor has a bit of a knock. So it appears I won't be able to make the Party. They are recommending an engine re-build. Was curious what you smart and experienced fellows think. Is it worth doing a rebuild on a numbers matching engine or getting one from Classic Cruisers? Has anyone purchased any motors from them in the past? I've got to really think this through. They say behind every disaster is an opportunity. Is there anything I should be considering in this position? I'm still bathing in disappointment. I've been looking forward to this trip for a while now. Should I take the grill off and zip tie it to my jeep and come anyway? UGH!

We'll be at the Outdoor Expo, arriving on the 17th, and then heading to Queen Creek to visit friends for a few days on the 23rd, probably heading home on the 27th. Might try to stop in Cottonwood to bug @RUSH55 and check on his progress on the way down from Flag or on the way home. Always ready for a beer and catching up.

Bummer on the news. I am not sure on the cost difference but it might be worth keeping the original motor and having it gone through.

I think you should absolutely find a way to be there. Smoke a pipe, have some scotch. Pigs are nice but its the people that make the community.

I’m a Classic Cruisers fan but, even given my SBC addiction I’d be with Doomer on this. Especially given the originality of your Pig. Sure they can’t get you rebuilt in 8 weeks?

Bummer. I'm real sorry to hear this. I'd say rebuild your 2F.

But, here's another idea to get you there. Find a running 2F, spend a weekend between now and the PP to swap in the running 2F. Go to the PP and run this donor 2F while your's is getting rebuilt, which could take some time. Swap engines when your 2F is ready and sell the donor for probably what you'd have in it.

Preliminary time table is 8 months on a rebuild. Apparently the right local shop has a long waiting list to get in. I’ll need to do some more research.

LS......Had to say it and while you're in there.... Seriously, maybe bandaid the motor for now with a new head gasket and throw new rod bearings in it for the party then pull it out for rebuild, if it really needs it.

if all original pig and plan to keep it that way then rebuild the numbers matching 2F. Big cost of a rebuild barring anything catastrophic is pulling it and since you would have to pull it for a donor it’s a wash.

Boy that is super generous. With four young kiddos, I'm a bit pinched for time regarding logistics. I'll ask my Avid Off Road if that's a possibility. Thank you again!
