mine was stuck. got it moving VERY slightly, then it froze. tried lubing with no 'penetration'.
So, I pulled the cable all the way out, lubed the sheath and now can't get it back into the sheath (still mounted in the dash)

three questions:
1 any help getting the cable back in ?
2 what size is the nut on the choke housing....I can't see up in there
3 is there any reason other choke cable assemblies from similar year or models might not work?
I found a few listings for other FJs (45, 55) and other years ('72 and newer), but no 71s

As I remember a 17MM wrench is what I used to remove the cable. Ones I reconditioned I sanded the cable itself before installing it back in the sheath. While WD40 and the like will help slide the cable back in they are more solvent than a lubricant. I use white grease. I have wonder if using shrink tubing would help keep dirt and moisture out and grease clean and inside. Later choke Cable housings were coated.

I too need a choke cable for our 71. Are these cables not available new? I thought they would be available?
checked with Specter Offroad ?

17mm wrench is correct.
My previous owner had cut the choke cable off about 2 inches from the firewall. I purchased a generic choke cable kit from the local parts store that had a metallic coil sheath. I was able to TIG weld both the sheath and the cable from the kit to my original choke assemble. Then, with some careful file work, I got everything back together and working. I packed some waterproof grease into the sheath before reassembly. Now I have a functional choke, that plays nicely with my V8 swap, and appears original on the dash. Totally investment was maybe $10 and probably an hour of my time.

finally found a replacement

I looked at this cable and wonder how strong or well done the knob is? Hard to tell from the pics, but doesn't look like it is "highly original in appearance". Not that I am 100% sure what the even is. If someone has some pics please post them up.

how the heck do people get a 17mm wrench on the backside of the choke cable?
I just removed the last piece of the original xfer shifter, pulled the cluster (heater is also removed), removed the ashtray, and am now trying to get the wiper switch out of the way. Just about everything is done by feel. Those Japanese mechanics must have tiny hands, and be super flexible!

I was able to fish a wrench in by removing the cluster and going under the wiper switch. I had to flip the wrench over between turns. I'd suggest wearing rubber gloves too. I found sharp edges back there and I find I cut myself less with rubber gloves, but I can still feel well enough to use the wrench by feel.

now you warn me! (just kidding)...cut some cuts, gave up on wrenching. Will live with the clutch I've got.

thanks all

thatr's a aftermarket Taiwan cable above ..fyi

I figured. It looked sort of sketchy quality wise. I am happy to report that I found my truck actually has its original choke cable in place in fact there appears to be another choke cable also from a later model. I’ll PM you for a cost for restoration.
