yes sir, said you can do it in the manual, gave it a try. HOLY s***, it works. I shift my tranny to neutral and grab high. Auto would be tough I would guess.

That's F'n cool...

can you do it into low range as well?

I just get the transmission in the right place, high revs for a shift from low to high, lugging for a shift from high to low. Then double clutch to shift the t-case.

It is syncro'd. I have not tried hi to lo but says you can do that too, normally i'm stopped anyway if I need to slow down more than the 7:1 first. :)

EDIT: For the money, it really is the best thing/value ever for wheeling.

Why wouldn't you need/want an ARB front locker? IMHO it's the single best mod I ever did on my rig, well maybe one of the top five anyway. :D

Remember you may not always want a very low geared t-case. The drive from the observation lake to the staging area on the Rubicon trail comes to mind. The run from our hood to Bronco would suck in high range, it would suck even more with a only 4:1 t-case.

Then again I'm coming from a manual transmission world, maybe it would be different with an auto.

From what Im to understand, with the Atlas, you can disnegage the front when bound up. IN otherwords, it'd be like the 2LO mod for the 60 series which would help with an auto front locker. With running the sag gear, I MIGHT NOT have the same issues as I do with the Blotch rig though...
I was thinking of going with the 5:1 or 6:1 atlas...6:1 might be a bit TOO DEEP. That would put me at over 105:1 with the auto. Im not sure HOW the auto impacts the total crawl ratio, but I know that it makes it lower some how.
When wheeling the Blotch rig, Im pretty much in low low all the time for most of the local trails frequented. when I want a bit less RPM, I up shift into 2nd or 3rd. If the terrain doesnt warrent deep gears, Ill shift into 4 high and use the trans to adjust that way. Im figuring with the Atlas it would be similar, but with different gearing. That is what would be nice with the 203/ split. Basically the same, but when I want to double it up, all id have to do is kick in the 203 which would account for MOST of the trails I/ WE like to run.

The other option is to run the Orion with the 203 and NOT muck around with housing.

Any opinions on that?

centered diff is the standard. If u need to upgrade to bigger stuff you are SOL unless you build custom everything.

Narrowed 14 bolt with 2 short side stock shafts are not expensive or difficult..

203/Orion starts making your DS short tho.

Do a 5:1 atlas and call it good.
You have to remember that you will have a motor in this truck. Big difference from Blotch.

I did the rubicon this year and finally had a reason to use double low as typically around the NW I only run in tcase low (numerically 23:1). Numerically I'm at 46:1 in double low but the torque converter adds in another ratio around 2:1 so @ 92:1 final ratio I had plenty of control on a place like walker hill. I loved wheeling my auto all day on the rubicon.

That's right Boots, I forgot that you had done the 4L80E in your conversion with the 203.
Did you get pretty good engine brake from that set up? This is where I REAAAAAAALY want the low gears is for descents. I employ 2 foot driving when wheeling Blotch to finesse over stuff, but going down hill without much hold back ONLY relying on the brakes gets a bit OLD after a while.
I like the auto personally and have never wished to run a manual except for the above scinerios. Part of the reason I invested in having the 4L60E rebuilt.

Thanks for the input!

So you think that the motor will be able to adequately compensate for the lack of range in the gearing?
Would the 4 speed Altas be a better way to go?

How do you narrow the 14 bolt?

Keith

It's probably not as good of engine braking as a manual, but it certainly keeps the speed down. I still needed brakes but not nearly as much since it doesn't just freewheel down the hill.

What about the Stak 2 speed t-case?
Or has that ground already been covered?

I brought that up a page or two back, and someone chimed in that there were shifting problems, and the customer service for the issue sucked.
Its a better PRICE than the Atlas, for the same options.
I think the Atlas 2 speed is the same essentially. (5:1 and 1:1).
Im gonna pick up an engine hoist today and pull the tub soon.
The blotch rig is going to be sold shortly :frown:.
The guy that is buying it is a Mudder and it will be going to a good home. THANKFULLY! He has been extremely flexable and understanding of what Ive been trying to accomplish thus far.
Ill be keeping the thrids with the 4.88's and the rims and tires. This will allow me a fair amount of cash to get THIS build under way including a decent t case set up. Things should start moving quickly once that happens.
So this weekend Ill have to replace the MC for him before that happens.
Rusty, are you available to do some brake bleeding?:D
Its hard work pressing that brake pedal...

It was a tough job but someone had to do it. :wrench:

Those speed bleeders are the s***z.

I'm gonna miss the big blue beastie. :frown:

Me too!
Actually the wife is a little bummed about the sale too. I was some what surprised by that.
Blotch has been a GREAT rig. Has NEVER shy'ed away from a challenge and has surprised the most skeptical on lookers with her prowess on the trail including me. Im taking a loss (of course) on the sale, but she'll go to a good home with some one who will love her and care for her as I have. Shell be getting a Diesel motor out of a BJ60, new diff gear set and ARB's to kick off her new life with her new owner. Im just glad some one wants her in this market. He even said that he was gonna get california BLOTCH plates...that'd be cool.

Got a hoist yesterday...have a few odds and ends to tie up before I completely CONSUME the garage. The tub is hooked up to the hoist and READY to pull. I CANT WAIT to get at that frame with a wire wheel. Im tired of CONSTANTLY sweeping the caked on mud and crap off of the floor.

Like I told you yesterday, we can tow the frame down to the quarter wash and get the bulk of the crud off. I think I know where I can borrow a flat bed so no registration worries.

I know where you can get one.:D

I am home Sunday and Monday.

Actually, I had a bit of time before my daughter showed up with her 4 runner for me to work on...AGAIN...
Pulled the tub and decided..."why not..." I started after it with the angle grinder and wire wheel. Ill say this. It cleaned up VERY NICE! I was extrememly surprised at the overall condition of the frame. The only place that is questionable at this point is the rear bumper/ x member. They had this POS drop hitch on there, and there are some stress fractures around that area.
Ill post some pics later. There was some kind of liner that someone put on the frame. Not sure if it was factory or not...it really protected the frame.
Still...need to get the crap outta the INSIDE of the frame rails, so Jack and Rusty...I might be hitting you guyz up and well go drop some quarters in the machine.
