Let's say current owner isn't sure what happened, what's your best guess? Keep in mind, this is a potential donor for an LS swap.

Do you have any pics from the exhaust manifold side?

Based on what little I see I assume it was a fuel related fire that got put out or went out quickly. Maybe a pressurized section of the fuel rail/related leaked and sprayed fuel up into where the plug wires and an old wire was cross-firing and ignited the vaporized fuel? Perhaps the engine was shut off quickly and there wasn't enough fuel to keep the fire going long enough to consume much of the flammable stuff in the area and really get going?

Someone tried spraying starting fluid in the intake and caught on fire? It obviously has fire damage or it got really hot since the oil cap is melted and the pcv hose on the valve cover side has a melted bubble on it

I think the only problem is that there's a stick in the bay.

LOL, aftermarket replacement hood struts

Exactly what I thought. Thanks. Unfortunately I didn't get exhaust side pics SMDH.

Considering how there appears to be soot on only the passenger facing side of the intake manifold I don't think it would be fuel rail related since most of the damage appears to be on the passenger side. Those lines you see in the hood insulation are more then likely the inner structure of the hood

Looks like the owner might have tried use a torch to remove the exhaust manifold studs/bolts and caused a fire.

Some quality theories here. Thanks

Considering the amount of vegetation in the engine bay, forest fire?

seriously though, it sat for a while and either an animal built a nest over the exhaust manifold or leaves blew in and it caught fire. Quick hot fire with little fuel melted stuff but probably didn't do much real damage

The intake hose is taped up with duct tape and sitting at the corner of the passenger side firewall.

My theory: Truck was leaking/ burning oil. Probably a busted oil pump O-ring. PO stored three unopened quarts of oil in the engine bay to use to top off. One of them fell down onto the exhaust manifold and started a fire. The other two remain unharmed. There's probably an old sock laying somewhere in the bay that the PO was using to wipe off the dipstick.

What do I win?

Agree with the starting fluid theory. It was the janky wiring that caused the fusible link to blow, which caused the no-start condition. (Note the blackened 4ga. wire hanging there)

I thought about the oil too but there would have been alot more soot all over everything between the oil and the plastic burning

No battery, starter is disconnected (maybe missing), coolant hose plugged with bolt that should be holding something else together, some fire damage (may not be that bad since the fan shroud isn't melted) For the right price might be a fun project.

The CEL kept throwing codes 25 and 26 and he couldn’t figure out the cause so he got pissed and torched everything EGR-related?

(Not at all projecting feelings from my current situation)

No code 25 or 26 as it is a 95-97 ODB2.:bang:
