Looks like there's centrifugal/Rotrex style superchargers coming to the market for the 5.7L. Utilizing an HKS GTS8555 supercharger and air to water intercooled plenum.


 
Intriguing for sure...Always good to see new product. For the modest price difference, I think that I'd go with the tried, tested, & true TVS2650, however. What's good about centrifugal? In this case, it looks like it takes up a good amount of additional real-estate under the hood...

Anyone going to be the Guinea pig?

I'll pass on being the guinea pig although I'm back and forth on trying to adapt a supercharger for a GX460 build but we're in 200 series forum so...

A centrifugal supercharger, generally, can have a smaller overall footprint, more flexibility in placement (versus a large roots blower that sits on top of the engine), and for two well designed systems for a given engine, in theory a centrifugal system is usually more efficient (less parasitic loss, less heat introduced to the system, etc) than a roots system. Now with this particular system they are installing some sizeable hardware on top of the block anyway, so, that footprint advantage is a bit of a moot point.

In practice ... I like roots style blowers for offroad (low end torque off the line versus a more linear powerband for a centrifugal setup) and they are tried and true for the LC200. If I was going to supercharge an RC-F or another high revving engine, I'd go with a centrifugal (like RR Racing has done with their Rotrex based package). Different horses for different courses.

A centrifugal supercharger is essentially a belt driven turbo. They need higher engine speeds to make boost than a roots style does.

At speed yes.

Slow speeds on a trail though.. it isn't gonna do much.
 
Yea I know had one on my 350z made some good power before the engine went bye bye lol, for low speed stuff like trails and rock climbing you could run an slim fan on the back side of the front mount intercooler, that is if there's enough space
 
Thats a pretty interesting kit and wild that they replace the entire intake manifold with the water to air intercooler.

I have heard of people using a smaller pulley on centrifugal superchargers to get them spun up faster, and then use a BOV/Re-circulation valve to limit boost at higher RPM. That way, you get more response down low but dont over do it up top.

Here is the compressor map for the GTS8555. Just based on the power numbers(510 HP) they are claiming I think the compressor would be operating at the red dot at sea level. So at 1.4:1 pressure ratio and ~64% efficiency the charger air temps should be around 160F out of the compressor. So the intercooler doenst have to do a TON of work.

So the TVS would actually be more efficient at 510hp. I am assuming 1 lb/min of air flow per 10hp. So 51 lbs/min at 510 hp.
