Yes, another oil question...and understand the preferred oil of 80 owners is Mobil 1 0w40.

I checked the FAQ and noticed it says to only use Castrol made in Germany. I have read some positive comments and seen strong test results on Castrol 0w30 and 0w40. However, when shopping for them I noticed that the 1qt containers say "Made in Germany" while the 5qt containers say "Made in Belgium". Has anyone tried and compared them? Should one be preferred over the other?

Thanks

any oil is better than no oil - wherever it's made

and yes, I am German, and I do not run Castrol :D

No, I don't prefer Mobil1. I use Quaker State Advanced Durability 5W-30 from Walmart.

I get 5000 to 7000 miles per oil change (I do Blackstone analysis every other oil change at a minimum) to track engine issues and health.

Why are you going with 0W-?? The oil cap on the VC should state your oil weight for the vehicle spec. If not, get a new OEM cap for your VIN.

I burn -0- oil between oil changes. When I mistakenly poured in 10W-30, I was suddenly leaking and burning oil. Kinda freaked me out. Changed out the oil and the problems went away again.

Many on here run Rotella 15W-40 diesel oil in their gasser (for some reason).... I would NEVER do this.

Both Germans and Belgians make good beer. Why should it make a difference in their soy-based oils?

The idea behind that statement was to avoid Castrol's US-spec Group III hydro-cracked base stocks in favor of the Euro-spec Group-IV base stocks of a "true" synthetic. In the US it is legal to market hydro-cracked base stocks as "synthetic," even though this isn't technically true to the definition of the word.

Thanks to:
@DSRTRDR for the pragmatic response
@BILT4ME for the thoughtful views and overview on your experience
@fj4068 for clarifying the base stock definition...makes sense

The "0" oil is definitely on the light side, so I'll likely try the FSM spec of 5W-30 and 10W-30 and see which runs better. I wouldn't run a diesel oil in mine. I already have a diesel (not a cruiser) to pour that Rotella.

To the original question I would think the quality would be similar Germany vs Belgium.

I am one of those whack jobs who runs diesel oil (5w40 Rotella T6). For one reason I can use it in almost everything I own (F-350, 4Runner, motorcycle - it works great with wet clutches and is much cheaper than motorcycle oil, I have an Amazon subscription for 3 gallons every couple months). The other reason is it tends to have a higher zinc content which is better for older motors. I do burn oil but it wasn't any better running 5w30, just need to do my valve seals sometime.

I believe 0W oil is a little light for the 1FZ.

For those of you who are interested in going down this hole, I'd recommend perusing the above site. When I had my 1HD-T I spent even more time than I already had learning about oils and their engineering.
The zinc belief is addressed as well as "diesel oil" and viscosity. Startup is where all engines wear the most, low temperatures are obviously the worst in this case. Something I learned is that thinner oils flow faster and carry away more bearing heat, measurably affecting temps of the bearings. I don't recall if it's stated on the above site or not, but when sufficient (and we have the specs) oil pressure is achieved you want as thin of an oil as possible. Furthermore, it appears that the best viscosity and availability of highly ranked oils is in the 5W-30 weight. My two 1Fz-Fe's are very happy with Mobil 0W-40, but I run that largely due to Costco's prices and the time I spend there, lol. I'd happily use other oils, though, and have. If money were no object, I'd use Amsoil, but with these 2 gallon-capacity, well-oiled (and oil coolered) engines, I don't think that's warranted. My $0.02
P.S. I just saw that Costco (Kirkland) is selling their own branded fully-synthetic 5W-30. I'd bet it's great for their (low) cost per quart. I'll likely try that sometime soon.

Kendall and I think Phillips 66 are using group V base stocks and should be good to go. The Costco oil should be Warren oil.

Project Farm YouTube channel has an oil shootout, Pennsoil Ultra-Platinum came in second. You can get 5 quart Jug for $21 on Amazon.

Uh, sorry to derail your thread! Oil gets us all excited...

Just got a marketing email from Costco. Great price on their synthetic oil:
