Currently I am running the 6 month only (3/69-9/69) two barrel carburetor on my f145.
I can’t stand it. I was warned, but I didn’t think it would be this bad.
What is the simplest ‘upgrade’ I can do to replace it? Like what year(s) would be best.
I’m talking one stop shop for the carburetor and any throttle cable brackets, etc I might need to make this happen. I understand I may need a different air cleaner top as well (mine has a stud from the carburetor and a wing nut on top currently.
Do I need a different throttle cable? Mine is just a cable end through a set screw thing now.
Do I just go to Spector and order one for a certain year and send mine in?
I’m so tired of this pos carb 😭

I swapped out my oddball 69 carb for an early 70's mechanical secondary as well. From memory you'll need:

Carb (late 69-73)
carb to air filter rubber gasket
new throttle cable
later (thinner)carb insulator
shorter carb to manifold studs
air cleaner cover with clamp instead of wingnut/stud
different fuel line
throttle cable return spring and bracket

Marks Off Road would very likely have what you need to make it work @65swb45

My 72 came to me in 82 with a Rochester two barrel and a Delco dizzy both are still there. I had to grease the accelerator leather pump cup around 2000 a few years later I had to do something to the dizzy. In a few weeks I'll be doing the carb in the ultrasonic cleaner with carb juice and making a new bushing for the advance shaft in the dizzy.

Mine came with a Rochester, was fine with it until it started leaking. Good excuse to go Toyota, I just picked the wrong one because it would work with the other stuff I already had (air cleaner, tall spacer). I was warned but I didn’t listen. I’ve got too much into this one but I can’t take another season of ‘will it choke and/or idle?’

X10

Mark or Jim C are carburetor Masters… if they can’t fix it… no one can.

Or, Marshal sells a good replacement. It all depends on what you want the end result to be.

Easiest is 70-74, where 73's with had the spring linkage. When looking at the 70-74 carbs you need to look at the carb and look for the cable retainer bracket (valve cover side, its a long bracket with a hole for cable. @65swb45 does sell a reproduction for this which is convenient. Match your air cleaner to the carb (69 had bolt down) 70-74 is sleeve and clamp.

Trickier is 75-80 carb, specifically ROW market carb. You will need to adapt the linkage to cable (easy if you have the parts from various carbs) to revert to cable, adapt air cleaner to suit your needs. 75-80 ROW air cleaner, 75-80 ROW Carb adapted to cable is the cleanest/most modern - but most difficult to acquire parts.

My recommendation is 70-74 and adapt air cleaner. Get the early 70s lid to go with it if you can, plus no fiddling with vacuum secondarys, mechanical is far simpler. Adjust jetting for where you are and keep it moving.

Lots of Great stuff on here. I am guessing your running a 1F motor. all the carburetors' people listed are Great carbs. I have helped guys over the years and the 1F carbs are really simple once you have spent time rebuilding them. Where in Calif are you located ? I had a buddy send me this from Oklahoma the 40 had not ran since 1993. Gotta love a challenge. I always test run a new build before I send it out to make sure everything is in good working order. Happy to help

I’m in Marin Co. I’m running the original f145 for the truck. You sent me parts for this carb last year, thank you!!

In my 1969fj40 I ran the original carb for years. Bought the same but rebuilt and ran that for years. Started having minor issues and finally bought a Weber 38mm. Cost $569. It runs way better and wish I had made the switch earlier. I love(d) running the old school stuff, but I also love just driving my rig without worry and issues. I let go of the old school air cleaner with the change. It was worth "modernizing." That then prompted me to upgrade my distributor the next year to a Performance HEI. Now it start reliably every time.

I’m pretty sure that’s my carb…the shop that’s doing a little engine work just got it back from Cali

Right on. Mick sent me a video after the installation.

Mick is great! He grew up with my boys. He’s done some good work on other vehicles for me in the past. I should have it back soon, waiting on a replacement radiator to get here and be installed. Looking forward to driving it. Thanks for the help on the rebuild!

I ran a 500cfm Holley 2 barrel for over 20 years on my F engine.
I have thought about doing this on my fj40. I own the holley 500cfm 2brrl carb almost new already. Right now I am running one of those cheep chineesium carbs. @projectTuRD you should look into that. honestly I have not had any issues with my knock off carb. However I did see you are having issues the the fitment. I wonder if the air horn is interchangeable

Is your distributor vacuum advance or vac retard? My 11/69 was a vac retard version so I eventually updated to a City Racer Fuji carb (basically a copy of the same carb a trollhole carb is) and a DUI distributor. The trollhole carb ran fine, wasn't my issue. Robbed it for a few brackets for the Fuji. You could do a later model Toyota vac advance dizzy.
