I know it is somewhere on here already posted but I just can't find out where exactly the connector is located. I just picked up an Actron OBD II scanner model CP9135. It says for 1996 and up but I think that there must be another adaptor plug perhaps to work on my 1997 FZJ80. In the FSM, it describes how to use the CE light in dash by number of flashes by shorting two pins on a connector. Is this how it is supposed to be done or will this scanner actually work? IMy wife's GMC Envoy 2006 has the plug mounted under the dash on the edge of the pannel. That is easy, but my Cruiser must require something more. Thanks

Left side of sash, lower part is a little slot hole. Put your finger in there and pull the fuse cover off. the connector is in with the fuses

Got The Code

Thanks again... I knew it had to be in front of me. If it had been a snake, I'd been bit. The code it pulled was P0402, "EGR Excessive flow". I followed FSM and pulled the EGR valve and blew out the filter and lubricated the fittings slightly to ensure good fit of the connecting hoses. I went ahead and cleared the code and the CE light is off. I will just have to see if it comes back on and then do a more complete check.

Thanks

Are you looking at the FSM for a 1997? Sounds like you've got the wrong set of manuals for your vehicle.

You cleaned the filter in the EGR modulator, not the EGR valve. The P0402 is another 2-trip logic so it won't appear immediately.

Correct Manual??

Well, I am pretty sure it is te correct one. I have had one for my 93' and I have the same book for the 97'. I am at work now and don't remember the title but when I get home. I will let you know to make sure I have the right one. Everything else as far as body electrical, suspension ect. I could have just not found the right section for using the scanner but it does give the deffinitions of the codes and the troubleshooting procedures. I just saw where it was talking about using the number of CEL flashes by shorting two pins, perhaps that was just another method if you do not have a scanner. I'll look though when I get home. It is green and black and I think it has everythibg all in one book instead of a set of books. I got my FSM's from Man-A-Fre in 1993 and then 1997 for my new cruiser.

Only works pre-OBD-II. Your 97 is OBD-II so, no paperclip, no flashing CEL. The only way that I know to pull codes is with an OBD-II scan tool.

Figured it out!

Well, as you might have already guessed, I had gotten that information from the 93' FSM. I forgot that I had picked up the wrong one. Oh well, you are right, there is no mention about the paper clip short and flash indication of CEL in the 97' since there wes no OBD II in 93'. I forgot that I brought the old book into the shop from inside and it was the first thing I picked up.
