Hello All,

I was after a short wheel base 70, they are excellent of road and popular over here.

Then I came across the truck pictured below, it belongs to a friend who takes excellent care of his trucks but its a medium wheel base model (MWB).

Ive been trying to do some research on it but there is little information out there. so, does anybody know what it is and how well it performs off road? any info would be appreciated especially if one of you has actually wheeled one of these.

the engine is a 4500 EFI, gasoline.

It is a FZJ73...

73 because of the leaf springs front and rear (74 has coil springs up front)

and FZ because of the 4500efi on the side... :)

Just a word of warning though - the roof at the back is not very stable (Fiberglass?), so if you want to attach anything with weight to it, you would need to add an external roll cage.

Cheers

Andrew

No, I don't agree, it is an FZJ74.

Should read...

'74 because of the coil springs front and leaf springs rear (73 has leaf springs up front)'

I see radius arms under the front of the doors, and no leaf springs sticking out in front of the tyres, therefore coil springs.

coil springs up front for sure so it must be a 74.

thanks for your comments.

.

Nearly all of us own the same body shape but with diesel engines. These are great off road and with some decent A/T tyres deflated to about 18psi they are very good in the sand.
The 1FZ engine is particuarly good in the sand

the 5 wheel nuts lets you know it has coil front and is there for a fzj74
fzj because it has a 1fz-fe motor
these motors absolut hammer offroad, compared to the diesels and early 3f petrol motors, i have one in my 79 series it gos well ,so a MWB should go even harder
looks to be a top of the range model with those nice wheels, flares and chrome front end,and chrome around the top of the door, i presume it has elec windows

... i presume it has elec windows

thanks for the details.

yes it does have electric windows and mirrors, also blue tooth (it may be after market) and ARB diff locks (definitely after market). shocks upgraded to old man.

I'll be testing it in a couple of hours, will let you know how it performs and post a picture or two.

really...?

That is among the best of the Land Cruisers. The FRP roof is stronger than the steel one and won't rust. If you do manage to break it it is replaceable as well.

Strength is a relative term.
I woudnt put anything up there unless it was on a roof rack supported by the body or bumper.
All the aftermarket FRP top manufacturers here sell a special reinforcing frame that is fitted ,either internally or externally to their tops for those who want to stow gear up top.

then we enter into another realm, COG.
by the time you have enough weight up there to be concerned about the strength of the fiberglass ... then you have more important issues to deal with.

i want to see proof of that they both collapse if you put enough (how much is a LOT? it's a relative word) force on them and it does not need a lot of force to collapse any toyota 4x4 roof .

A rollcage under a FRP for me please.

watched the vid with the white 74 ,man that is one good looking cruiser

I have a BJ70 with a steel roof and BJ74 with an FRP top. When I walk on them, I damage the steel one but not the FRP one.

I do have a rollcage below the FRP as well.

Assuming the roof is strong enough to hold a load(and I dont believe it is) then how do you fix it to the fiberglass?

The vibration and dynamic loads imposed on it from offroading will elongate the holes.
Normally on a boat where a bolt or a screw must penetrate the F/G ,there is a bulky reinforced section.

There have already been owners on here who have fixed roof racks to the FRP and pulled them off when they saw the destruction it was causing.
