Damn Nutley!! Not you too ;p Cheaper is not always better right?!?!?!?:flipoff2:

What 3rd are you using?

When I get a Diamond made it will have the "8.4" Tacom rear 3rd in the front and rear of my truck. I have a HP front now, which is good (and I hope that I can resale :)) but I want to get back to the swappable option I had in the begining.

The 3rd I will be using will be my ARB 4.88 centre I have lying around.

For what it is worth ($500 for gears, $1700 for locker), I see it would be silly to not splash out on longs a diamond, and 6-bolt TG's.

You can run the factory housing just truss it really well and support the outer balls.

Wayne

am considering that because freight on the diamond is BIG$$$$
just space balls out with LCWIZARD spacers.:)

rear steering in Yota stuff .. nice !

Rear off set ( centered D300/Mini Truc 4.7 t-case ? rear output .. ) more nice ..

There is a significant difference between a uber lite buggy and a mostly full bodies cruiser.

That's him, UpNOver, I'll let him chime in on last year's buggy specs. I know it has an 80 front axle and a Mini Truck front axle (I don't remember which is where on the buggy) both running Longs and no bump stops. He has been running these axles for years, and as he said, all he is braking is R&Ps.

The axle housings are seriously trussed and his steering arms are super beefy, one offs that plug into both the top and bottom knuckle studs.

Yes Mace, I do understand that there is a major difference between this rig and a full bodied LC, but it depends on what you are going to put it through, I don't see a full bodied rig climbing a 15' wall while roasting 39"s and the like.....

Back on topic here, OpTimUs, I see nothing wrong with your Axle specs. Diamond makes some super bling gear, but with some work, the Yota housings can hold up to lots of abuse.

Either way.... just add $$$.

Flame suit is on.

To extend on what I said, I like the Toyota gear, but I like it because it is cheep to make strong. Throwing a ton of money all at once into an axle that has size limitation is kinda silly.

Optimus, specs are good, what tires are you planning on? The 6 stud arms are a band-aid for people that don’t keep up on tightening their knuckles, and I guarantee if they get loose they will shear 6 studs just as easy as they shear 4..

The other recommendation I have is stick with 4.11 gears.

Brian makes dope housings and I’m thinking about getting one myself for the front since I already have all these parts :bang: My housing is bent.

I had to look to see if they make lockers for this diff and they do! A Detroit isn't uber expensive either. Maybe if I get a front diamond made I’ll make it for the 8.4 since I’ll be running one in the rear.

I like this statement .. and I'm share the same idea ..

That's the point, I do..

The diamond housings are really nice.

The 8.4 is nice because of the supports on the main bearing caps.

The stock 8.4 shafts snap like twigs (more often than the stock mini shafts for some reason)

If he is going to build this axle. I see no reason to dump 5K into a yota axle.

Get the 8.4 and whatever locker he wants (most of the cost is the 8.4 locker/ring gear)
Beef the living crap out of the housing with some scrap steel being VERY carefull not to warp the housing while welding. (not expensive)
Make a set of the spacers to make the axles wider (very simple if he has access to a lathe..)
Call bobby and get the proper length 30 spline longs and inners. ($635 on sale right now)
Add the 5th stud steering knuckle conversion. (a piece of angle Iron does wonders for those who do not torque often enough)

Go wheel it. :steer:

I just saved him probably 2.5K.

If that axle breaks, then he will realize the reasons for not using yota parts in a heavy pig..
If it never breaks, then he will come back on here and tell me that D60's and 14bolts are overkill..

:hmm:

Pics? :flipoff2:

How many have you really seem?
Do you thnk its because you pay attention more to the Tacos on the trail, or because the diff is stronger and the breakage goes to the axles, or because the trucks/4runners are heavier than old, or becasue of the extra 50-90 HP in the 2.7/3.4?

Ive just never seem one in person and the ones Ive heard of were 3.4L 4runners which could break a mini truck rear axle too.

Three, one of which was mine as I was letting off the clutch in my 40. Not even giving it much gas. 38.5" SX's and 140:1. The only nice thing was that the Taco diff is not a C clip unit, so I drove back to camp.

The second it snapped, a 14 bolt was swapped in..
Been beating the living daylights out of it since.

The 8.4 is also a misnomer. It is not really an 8.4 heck, it really is almost no larger (ring gear) than a 8" unit. But the cap supports are nice ;)
