Trying to isolate a "thump" or "clunk" in my driveline - I'm hoping I can see if the "thump" goes away with either driveshaft out, in order to isolate where the thump is coming from.... But since I'm a Cruiser newbie, I thought I'd better double check with the experts here so I don't screw something up!

Now that I have the front driveshaft off, can I drive it around with only the rear one without hurting anything?

Ditto if I drop the rear driveshaft and reinstall only the front one?

The answer is yes if you have a CDL switch. If you don't have a CDL you can order one from cruiser dan or slee.

There is a write-up in the FAQ sticky in the maintenance section all about driveshafts noise and troubleshooting.

Man I love that FAQ format, whoever thought of that was as genius as beer ina bottle!!! :D  :D

Yes, I have a Center Diff Lock button on the dash. Do I just start it up, hit the button, put it in gear and go?

Does it make any difference if I'm running with just the front driveshaft or just the rear?

Thanks - This place is a wealth of info! I read the FAQ on "driveline clunk", which is what got me started. But like I said, I'm a "newb" so I was unsure about exactly what need to do to be able to drive in 2wd without breaking something. Talk down to me - my experience with Land Cruisers amounts to exactly one week and about 130 miles on the highway. I don't even have an owner's manual!

You can order the OM and all the manuals (you'll want the FSM and the EWD) from Toyota Materials Distribution Center or C-Dan.

As others have said, you need to lock the center diff which means pushing the button and watching the indicator light to be sure it comes on. Then you can drive as normal but be aware that you won't have ABS. No biggie but it's something you should know so that you understand why the ABS light is on the dash.

Front or rear makes no difference. You'll need one or the other though... doesn't go far with both removed. :D

He has a 92. Stock center diff lock, no ABS.

Thanks Curtis. You must be clairvoyant because it's not in his sig line and he didn't mention owning a 92 in this thread. I think from now on it's just not worth the effort to try to assist someone unless they clearly give the details needed to assist.

Don't worry, I scolded him in his other current thread. ;)

Cheers all,
And ashooter: Just kidding.

Ashooter,

You can drive as much as you like with the center diff locked. Just be careful.
I've dented my rear DS several times. There's a great drive line shop in town where I take my rear DS to get re-sleeved and balanced. It usually takes them 24 hours to have it done.
In the meantime, I drive around with only FWD. The 80 handles completely differently. You have to be a little more careful.

Regards

Alvaro

Even if his was a later one and didn't have the switch, it's still easy to do. Pull the shaft, shift low range, roll a few feet to lock the CDL, stop, pull the locker fuse, shift high range and drive.

Sorry about that... Does my new sig line clear things up?

Please don't give up on idgits like me because I'm too dumb to ask the right questions! I know it must be frustrating for y'all sometimes, but you guys have already saved me at least a couple of hundred bucks and I REALLY DO APPRECIATE your help.

Please ignore the angry old guy with his finger on the GDB. He can be a cranky ol' fart sometimes. :D
