Contrary to what someone else suggested, rust is not usually an issue with Hawaii trucks, unless they've been used as beach rigs.
I dunno... if you live on the windward side, that salty air will get you even if somewhat inland. And unless garaged all the time, those UV rays will also take it's toll on the leather and paint. I'm not sure about the iron-oxide dirt but it can't be good on the undercarriage, can it?

I don't know about the sea air theory. Sounds logical, but do coastal California, Oregon and Washington cars suffer much from rust? I remember that Landpimp claimed rust was not common for Puget sound cars. I've spent a lot of time in Hilo, which is the wettest windward locale in Hawaii, and there are a lot of very fine older cars and trucks on the road there. The cleanest FJ62 and early '80s Toy 4x4 pickup I've ever seen, for instance. Hawaiians in general are way into autos and take good care of them. However, if rust does get going, you're screwed because of the high temps and humidity working overtime to promote the corrosion. Also, cars parked outside in Hawaii will suffer quickly. I've seen Puna cars parked outside in the grass that rapidly develop significant undercarriage rust. UV also cooks the paint, as you've said. Moist dirt caked underneath would certainly be no good. I'd say we're both right. The potential for rust is certainly there, as is the potential for a very clean vehicle.

Edit: I was just there (Hilo), and noticed a friend of mine had a "new" truck. It's a '85 Nissan 4x4 pickup with 35K miles. Absolutely spotless-showroom condition! Price? 1000 dollars, bought from an old Japanese fellow.

Coastal OR ones do! Just driving through there for a weekend and you end up with this 'sea grime' on your truck!

I don't think I would recommend a Hawaii cruiser, for a mainlander. There are too many decent condition ones around the continental US, to spend the kind of money necessary to go inspect it and to ship one over. I think the overall rust situation on the islands is definitely worse than the average OR/WA/CA/AZ type rigs.

Agreed and like you said, one key factor is whether the vehicle was garaged or stored outside.

But what is nice, most Hawaiians baby their drivetrains. They aren't really in a rush to go anywhere! ;)

Hi all - so I've been perusing for quite some time for a 100, and it's been difficult to find just the right one. I've also looked into a GX470, but it still didn't feel as good as a 100. I found one local to me that could be a good deal. It's on "parts hold" right now at a local dealer, so I haven't been able to drive it but I did get a chance to look at it (at night however). They know essentially nothing about it - not even why it's on parts hold.

It is a 2003 and has an interesting color which is sort of blue pearl with some green and purple depending on how you look at, but please keep in mind I saw it at night under poor lighting. The interior is tan, and it looks decent. The leather isn't very soft, but it doesn't have any major wear marks or tears to note. The steering wheel looks a little rough like the driver wore a couple of rings and had death grip every time they drove it. The carpet mats are extremely dirty, but the carpets look pretty clean underneath. The body is in excellent shape and I didn't note any major dents or damage. I popped the hood to get a look and saw little bits of rust around certain fasteners, so I could tell it wasn't a Nevada vehicle. It has 126,000 miles on it, and I did not see any sticker anywhere noting that the timing belt has been changed. I looked on the engine cover, radiator, fan shroud, fender, etc and didn't find anything to confirm the work. I pulled the CarFax, and it shows one owner which is great, but it lived in Chicago for 4 years and 70k, then Tenessee for 2 years and 20k, then in Vegas for the rest. They're asking $17.9k which I think they'll be pretty firm on I'm guessing. I don't mind that price, but I will be trading in my X5 and I don't want to get bent over too much on my trade. I have very reasonable expectations of what I will get, so I don't think that we'll have any issue. I guess I just worry about the rust issue a little bit because I've always purchased either NV or AZ cars and totally run from anything that has even a spot of rust. I've been looking for a long time however, and I would like to make a purchase soon. Does this seem like a reasonable deal if it drives well and the parts hold isn't anything too crazy?

Summary:
2003 Land Cruiser
126k miles - no evidence of timing belt
one owner - but Chicago car with some rust
looks clean but will need reconditioning/leather softener
asking $17.9k

Is it maroonish (Red Garnet Pearl) or grey? If it drives good and looks good in the daylight, I'd say it's reasonable even without the 90K.. Check the undercarriage for more IL rust though.

I wanted check if this is a good price:
2004 LX470, Less than 44K miles, asking for $29.940, one owner.

It is definitely not garnet its much closer to grey with a lot of blue in it. Here's a picture. I agree the rust is the only thing that makes me hesitant. If it was a local NV car, I would have driven it home last night.

i'm seeing quite a few 01-02's on CL in the 18k range (calif search). wish they were closer to me :/ patience.

well i'm checking into this one on the coast of Oregon. It was from medford. A person traded it in on a big dollar Mercedes at the mercedes dealership. told him i'm interested in it for
15k. dealer is suppose to be checking it all out as it's going to be a 4 hr drive each way and it better be sweet... it has 102k miles. trade in is 13k, suggested id 18 and private is 15k,

asked about the 90k, they had no idea other than the person that had it did the maint so they assume it has been done, is there a sticker on the front engine IF a toyota dealer did this service?

Looks like River Rock to me.

My LC was an Oregon car for 130k and doesnt have any rust FYI. If this 01 doesnt have Nav I'd say that's a bonus.

so when is the time to seriously consider the valve adjustment on the 100's? it says to inspect... 60k intervals, how do they inspect? listen or spot check a few?

RobB, I would pay asking price if I had to on that unit IF its in perfect condition (like 9+/10), checks out on car fax and has papers for timing belt etc. If no receipts, I would try to talk it down some, maybe $17k - any compromise in the middle would be a good deal IMO.

If they didnt budge but I still felt good about the overall package, I would bite the bullet and own it. Then I would have the TB done along with an entire baseline PM, and drive without worries for many moons.

FWIW 2001 is my preferred year (as long as theres no NAV as RobRed noted). Also for point of reference, my 01 was probably only an 8.5/10, but it did have extensive receipts. Also had 120k miles, when i purchased it for $16.4k in AZ 2 years ago.

Good luck!

Or you could get one from outside of the rustbelt for $17.5. I bet you could pick it up for $17 which would cover the shipping.

I did see that one and it looks pretty nice. I drove the local car here last night, and it drove pretty well. It hasn't been through detail or the shop yet which shows. The guy who traded it in had 4 kids, and you can definitely tell. The carpets are extremely dirty and the trunk mat is covered in bleach. I'm sure it will look better after it's cleaned, but I'm just not sure how much better. I have a call in to try to determine if the timing belt was done so hopefully I will hear back soon!

The one up here is a one-owner and appears to be in good shape. I talked briefly with the owner, but decided to keep my 2000.

Well i spoke to the sales guy and he said the carfax was clean and showed two owners, it showed the maint at 91k on the printout... Also he said when cold it had an exhaust tick but after warming up it goes away. The interior is spotless. He said there bottom over the phone was 16,250. There is a pict he sent me of the interior that shows the center dash and it has a lcd?? He said it didnt have navigation. What would that display be for? Its factory looking

So exhaust would be like 225 plus labor, unless i do it.
