Car shipping

Anyone have personal experience with a car shipping company? I found a rig in CA that I'm interested and if it passes the Carchex.com inspections I'll buy it and ship it to DC.

I don't have experinace to your question. Please make sure you have someone look at it before you close the deal. Lots of mudders in cali and if you cant find one, work with the closest Toyota shop or dealer

I'd avoid DAP. They're low on customer service and slow on delivery. Wasn't there a MUDship thing going on for a while?

Looking at '01 but havent seen it in person. Do all the '00 plus LC have A-trac? If so where is it, i dont see it beside the shifter. I saw on Slee that it was added, but is it an option.

All 00+ have ATRAC. It's passive so there's nothing to select. The only thing that would be by the shifter would be the AHC control which was only available on LX's for those years. There's also a center lock which is on the dash, just to the left of the temp dial.

Is this a bad idea?? all opinions gratefully accepted!

Recently i am fortunate enough that i in the market for another vehicle. i am looking in the 16-18 range. after looking through several used and not very happy with the current offerings i came upon a posting for a land cruiser. i have always been very enamored with the land cruiser line but not had the fortune of owning one (yet).

my objectives are to have a vehicle for road worthy for a daily driver but still have the capability for the off road as well. I have always liked the lc for its long history and quality.

my current thought is this: get a 98-up land cruiser/lx470 in the 10 - 12 price range. then look at either rebuild/remanufacture/swap engines depending on age, etc.

i have come across several ones for sale in the price range with typically 150 - 175k in mileage. my plan was any rebuilding was to be done by a lc specific shop given the better familiarity. i am not sure why but to me there is some manner of comfort in the rebuild when the engine is close to 200k.

so my humble questions are these?

is this a bad idea?
Land Cruiser or LX470?
Is it a mistake to bother with a rebuild if the vehicle has been well maintained?
If this is not a bad idea, is it better to try for lower miles?
anything else that i may be missing or need to consider?

thank you for reading/replying. any and all comments or opinions are appreciated

The 2UZ-FE is good for 300k so you can put your rebuilding fund aside. I've not seen/heard of a single engine getting rebuilt here. In fact the only head gasket I've heard of was on a LP convert. And not only is the engine good for 300k but that's the design criteria for the overall vehicle. They're built heavy and they last. If you snoop around here, it's not uncommon to see people buying at 150k-200k and post how surprised they are that the vehicle runs/drives like new. More important is to find one that hasn't been abused, isn't from a 'rust-belt' state, and has a clean title. In the low teens you should not have any problem finding a vehicle in your year range for under 150k. A good starting point to to read here: Slee Off-Road 100 Series Newbie Guide

Need pre-purchase advice on a '99

Private party sale of a '99 100 series. White on tan. 150k. Current owner bought at Toyota dealer.
Has:
rear locker
3rd row seats
wood trim
factory hitch

Asking just under $10k.

Will have to fly a couple hours to pick it up.

What questions to ask for this one?

sneck, if you have $18k to spend on a vehicle... the way to buy a cruiser is to buy the lowest mile or latest year you can afford. if you are not planning to spend money on modifications, then spend it all on a cuiser. there is nothing more you need to do, it will go forever. if it needs some preventative maintenance, then keep some money aside for that. its that simple!

Buying a use land cruiser

I am in the market for a used land cruiser, the model is year 2000 , with 165,000 miles. The car shape is OK. It does not have running board. What is a reasonable price for this vehicle, and what the lowest this kind of vehicle go for?

Price is entirely dependant on your local market. Where are you? For perspective, I bought my 2000 a little over a year ago (Oct '10) and I paid $13900 for it with 134400 on the clock. A little high IMO, but I live in a rather expensive market (Denver metro). Overall I'm very happy with the purchase. I will never sell this vehicle.

What would be considered a fair price for a 06' w\100K miles in good condition? It's optioned pretty well but doesn't have DVD package. It also needs a timing belt and has some minor damage to the rear bumper. The interior and everything else appear to be in great shape.

LX found

Ok, I think I finally have found my Hundy.

Seller is asking $15K - 2001 LX 470 with 130k miles, No Nav, has ML stereo and tow package. NADA for this model and mileage unit is $19,200 so it's under the NADA value. It's a Carfax certified one owner, for whatever that means, I guess the original owner traded it in and it's been passed around from dealer to wholesaler which is where I found it.

I did my test drive and the engine pulled nice and strong, no strange sounds from the drive system, AHC works fine, I can't tell if the suspension settings for comfort/sport work, I don't notice a difference. There are cosmetic issues, but I don't think those are a big deal. I'm having the seller drop it off at a local Toyota dealer for an inspection tomorrow to confirm the vehicle's mechanical condition.

Needs to be cleaned in a major way. There was water in the driver's floorboards which the seller says the window may have been let down, Is there any good way to test the weather stripping other than taking a waterhose to it?

Might end up having to replace the leather, I know there is a vendor on here that will replace, not sure I want to incur that expense right now, for the time being they are serviceable.

The carpets are pretty nasty too, has anyone replaced their carpets before?

The antenna is broken, the ML subwoofer is blown, maybe some of the other speakers are blown.

The steering wheel wobbles when the breaks are applied, I think the rotors or pads need to be inspected.

Any thoughts on the price? I figure about 1-2k to get the breaks, cosmetic and stereo issues figured out.

Very little rust under the rig, no broken seals around the CV boots, shocks appear to be functioning fine.

Well, the no-rust and one-owner are good signs! If it's just a cosmetic fixer and you plan to use it as a trail rig then it might be a good buy. Make sure the 90k as been done. Based upon your description of the condition, it's going to be tough for the guy to sell so you can probably get a grand or so off the top.
