Buying/Selling - what year, how much, etc. - ask for opinions here (5 Viewers)

I'm getting back into the game after about a five year absence, having sold my 1999 back in late 2004. I've narrowed my search to two vehicles: a 2006 (in service 11/05) with roughly 45,000 miles and a 2007 (in service 5/07) with right over 69,000 miles. They are essentially the same vehicle option-wise, the only difference being that the 2006 has rear DVD. Vehicle history appears to be solid for both. Assuming a roughly similar price for both, which would you choose? Would you take the lower miles or the newer model year? Both are nice trucks, and I'm torn here.

I have not personally driven an '03+ but from my friends that have or do own both they say the 5speed makes a rather large difference overall. I think the '03 would be the better choice IMO. If I could figure out a reasonable cost effective way to stuff the 5-speed (A750F) tranny in my '99 I'd do it! Having said that there is a "way" but the bridge computer/controller is $1800

I did get the pics of the undercarriage. There is some rust. They are Verizon camera phone pics, so the detail isn't the best. It also looks like one of the "boots" around the one "ball and socket (?)" is leaking oil due to a rupture. I don't want to post all the pics on here, but I'd like you to take a look, and give me your impressions. Is there a way to email you pics through here?

If you plan to make it a Keeper I would go for the Lower miles.

Question about high mileage 100 series

I am considering traiding my bmw in on a 2000 100 series. The LC's I am looking at all have the rear locker and the mileage ranges from 100,000 to 120,000 miles. The prices for the LC's are in the mid teens. I guess my worry is the high mileage. I have owned LC's before, as a matter of fact I have an 80 series as my trail truck. My concerns are the engine and transmission, what kind of life expectancy can I get out of them with proper maintenance? My 80 has 210000 miles on it and it purs like a kitten. Of course the 80 series has the venerable 1fze and the transmission is very stout too. Can I expect 250000 miles out of the 2uzfe ? Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated

I bought a 2000 100 series last August with 79K for 12500. It had a couple of issues (rust on rear hatch pinch weld, probably from a leaking seal on the high middle brake light small rust issues in 2 places). While there is a rare concern with the tranny on the 2000 model, I have not been able to find any evidence of a lack of longevity on the truck otherwise. Search for "2000 failed tranny" to research the issue. At 100-120k you should make sure the 90k maintenance has been done (seems to run about 600 at independents to 1000+ at dealerships). Otherwise the 100 series is every bit a land cruiser that the 80 series is, just better, safer, more capable without mods, nicer looking and comfier. (now watch me get flamed by the 80s owners)

100-120K is not all that much for a 100. My 1998 has 226K and runs great. With proper maintenence your 2000 LC should last you for a long time.

don't you still have the original shocks on it? Atleast we know how many times they can get to the mall and back... . Mine were toast at 120K, I mean siezed, blown, and worn out!



In seriousness. The landcruiser was built with a 25 year service history in mind. So the roads in America are not harsh like those in Australia and Africa, and the percentage that actually takes them offroad is very slim. But those who wheel don't report that many issues. Other than the tranny, exhuast manifolds, and exploding front diff. Which if you look at Chevy, Ford, Chysler, Dodge, yada yada yada... they all have a lot of issues. Main one not being able to make it past 100K without falling apart. For a truck to last 25 years, or go 300K+ is amazing. I have a 2000 and my transmission hasn't exploded. My manifolds leak but it gives it character. and if you look at some of my pictures, I wheel the piss out of it, I don't baby it when I'm on the trails. They can stand the abuse.


Find a clean 100, drive it, you'll buy it and sell your 80 to fund the 100's mods. You wont look back

I bought my 2002 100 in July and love it. I have 80,000 miles on it and just had the 90,000 mile service done, a little early, but making a long road trip in June and wanted the preventative maintenance done (age, not mileage).
Get the hundy, you won't be disappointed (keep the 80 though, I wish I had the room for one).

We looked for a pre 2001 100 series for about a year before buying a 2000 a few days ago. I didn't want the nav and have heard when they fail it's a $4k fix?? I have a garmin and magellan which get me where I need to go. Prices are all over the board from $15-$25K with miles between 80K-150K. We ended up with the 2000 with 150K for $10.5K. One owner with all service records up to date. The coil pack was the last of the records at 125K miles replacing all 8 packs for around $900, so might look into that. Looking again

So the 2000 LC that I found in Niwot CO on Craigslist went to the dealer today to get a used car inspection. They found about $4k worth of work that needed to be done, so I don't think I'm going to go for that. It looks to me like the dude bought the car (well-maintained) in 2005 at 57k mi and just drove the heck out of it on the highway 'til now. I don't think it makes sense to buy an LC that went 60k mi without all the proactive services that needs to be done.

So I'm back to the search again. Autotrader and Cars.com find a few of them. I did fine this "clean" one at a dealer in Lincoln NE that claims its price was recently lowered to $12k. Has anyone check this one out yet?

Unfortunatly my shocks are still origonal. I really need new shocks. They are stuck behind getting new LO beams and fixing a leaky CV axle seal on my to-do list.

I am in the mkt for another LC…started looking at the 62s which I love then the 80s but now have crept back to the 100s…have an ’03 very lightly modded family truckster with 116k which will get cleaned up and goto the wife…have been looking at 2000-02 but was thinkin if I could get a ’03-04 for say 20k (all in w/ 90k service done) or even an ’06 for say 25kish (the dude is dreamin…) maybe that would be the best way to go??

As u can see I have slowly creeped up the $$ level…the ’03 we have now we own outrite and will keep forever, will do the same with this new purchase…vehicle usage mainly DD, towing, etc with offroad exped/camping usage nothing hard core though like rockcrwlin, not yet anyways...

I am considering the 2000 slightly modded 100 in the for sale section…have spoken with the seller and also spoke with ironpig this am in doing a prepurchase…that 100 will have up to date services 90k and some nice mods…

compare that to a newer unit with unknown history and no mods like a 1-owner '03 with 110k (assuming no 90k) for 18.5k at a dealer in ohio…

of course any unknown vehicle gonna need a lot of baseline services done etc, 90k, tires, brakes, fluids etc

the dude would aprreciate any opinions/thoughts/ramblings etc???

Is the $18.5 '03 in Ohio near Cincy (on a GM lot)? If so, I've seen pics of the undercarriage. Much rust, and needs at least two CV boots, shocks, and a muffler. I was very interested in it, but not at $18.5.

that the one, thanks for the heads up...i assumed the 90k was NOT done as well but was gonna try the toyata dealer on the carfax...

also seems like that rig has jumped around a bit as well from dealer to dealer? what ya reckon they have into it? 15k?

Ah, no worries. If you want to try to work out a deal for it, more power to you. It has not had the 90k service. I offered $15.5, and the owner came back with $17,991. I told them that was too much considering it needed the 90k service, and about $2k worth of other work underneath to get it back to good shape. I asked them to let me know if anything changes as far as their price is concerned. As far as the jumping around of the vehicle, it was a one-owner (I think). Looks like it has been on lots since early Nov. I'd say a few people have been scared off by the undercarriage rust. Still, if they would take $15.5 it might be a good deal. Again, if you are interested in it, see what you can do. You will not offend me at all!

there was a black 03 94kmiles on criagslist in castlerock CO with the 90k done listed 24,5...i offered 20k and they said firm at 24,5...

Does anyone care to share opinions/advice on this one I am considering? 29,991$ with 53K on an '04. It is 400$ above KBB... most others online are around 30K$ for an 04 with 50-80K miles give or take depending on the mileage. Just looking for an angle before I even inspect it...
