hello i am purchasing an f motor from a 71 to put in my 72 tommorow. the owner bought the motor to install in his truck from his good friends running truck 10 years ago and it has been sitting since. the thing i am wondering is that i just checked it out and i can spin the motor by hand using the fan, which in turn turns the crank. it turns smooth and easy. the plugs are in it. should it be easy to turn? i built a couple 302 fords and it seemed much much harder. he says the motor should be fine........ i plan to pull the head and have it re-done... then swap it into my truck which has a smoking motor. smokes on start bad then lightly smokes. thanks spinning that easy just got me thinkin a bit

My 1F (9/72) is really difficult to turn over by hand (I use the hand crank that slips into the slot on front of the camshaft). I even have two cylinders with a compression of 40psi.

If your turning the fan your just turning the water pump. Is there a belt attached? Is the pulley attached to the crank turning too. I would think there isn't anyway you could turn the crank by the fan even the plugs were pulled but fan.

totally agree... I forgot to ask if the fan belt was hooked up... on my new rebuild 2f, you could turn it by hand at the fly wheel, but it was difficult, never by turning a fan, the blade would break first

...wondering if an engine sits 10 years, and ALL oil drips off the rings & walls, if it would be easier to turn over by hand? Or maybe some valves are stuck open?
I'd lube it up and try again...with the valve cover off so you can watch and see if everything moves. Maybe look to see if the dizzy rotor moves too, when you turn the fan..

Don't waste your money

Buy an early 2F, it will drop right in & has more horsepower. Any engine that has been sitting for 10 years has to be completely torn down & inspected before use. Over that period of time, condensation forms & fluids break down, causing corrosion, so there could be problems, as everyone else in here is telling you.

k thanks figured that didnt seem right. wayyyy to easy. yes the crank was turning via the fan belt. i turned the crank 360 degrees with no prblem. one hand and didnt have to try. thanks for confirming.......

walk away and go find yourself a 2F
you will be much happier

Not everybody.
Pighead says BS. A LandCruiser engine sitting for a measly 10 years will fire right up and run. Happens all the time. Show 'em a little love and 13.5 volts...drive it.

mine sat for 12 yrs and fired right up and have taken it on a 1200 mile road trip

You should be able to turn the engine using the fan blade or a wrench on the anternator nut and the belts. If the belts slip, push down on them to increase tension.

Do a compression test and if it checks out, run it.

I guess it all comes down to where was it setting & was it stored wet, but a 30-year-old 2F is still a better engine that a 40-year-old F. Whatever it is, if it's going in my s***box, I'm going through it first.

Go pick up a compression tester, you'll have to buy one someday anyways. 10 years is not that bad. But maybe it would be easier if you did a compression test on your current smoking 1F engine.
