If you are in Chatt area, I'm happy to let you look at mine. I have a full float both in the truck and out of the truck. Pretty straight forward.

I thought I would throw this out there, this is my first post in this forum, as I'm new to the off road and land cruiser scene. So, hello gentlemen. I have a 91 FJ80, and am interested in completing a full float axle swap. I was wondering if any of you have completed the swap here in TN, and if so, if you had any suggestions, secrets, things yo look for, or if you had a "guy" who was your parts pusher. Thank you in advance, I'm looking forward to meeting you all soon on the trails!

Tony

@TN FJ 80 Guy ive got a 91 that I did a FF swap on a few years ago and I have another FF that was going in my 92, but I'm kind of thinking of using it in another project...

Anyway the swap is really about as straight forward as it seems. You will need to find a FF rear out of a 93-97 rig. Make sure you get the e-brake cable complete up to the handle. The brake line bolts up to the same spot on both. Basically find a good donor, maybe rebuild the brakes while you have it out, then put your rig up on some stands (or a lift if you are so lucky) unbolt the 4 links, sway bars, driveshaft, shocks, and brake line from yours and roll it out. If you can get it up high enough you can just roll it out on the tires. Then just roll the new one under and bolt everything back up, route the e-brake cable, fill with fluid and get on.

Couple things you may want to upgrade is the brake master to a 93-94 unit @cruiseroutfit can fix you up with the right one. Also, you may want to service the hubs, repack or replace the bearings. You will also need a minimum of a 16" wheel to clear the larger disc brakes.

If you do the FF swap, another good upgrade is to install a set of 93-97 calipers and rotors up front. If you do that then you will have completely upgraded your brake system to the later model stuff which up front is significantly more robust.

Hope that helps, but it really is a very straight forward swap. And it may sound kinda silly, but also Make sure you have the same gear ratios. Most of the US market trucks came with 4.10s, so unless it has been swapped, any FF should bolt right in.

Wow, @jynx that is very helpful! Thank you so much for that information! If you decide to part with that axle, let me know! Are you in East TN?

@oldredfj60, I am in the greater Knoxville area...Thank you for the offer, though!

Betsy is for sale.

1985 4x4, 300 I6, 4spd, 8.8 rear. Rough Country lift, 33" BFG KM2s on 15x10 wheels.

Interior is not the best. Dash is a mess but the seat is near perfect and it rides and drives good. I have a set of WARN premium hubs that will go with as I never got them installed along with the patch panel I bought for the floor, a set of late model 300 manifolds that I got for it and a brand new steering stabilizer that never got installed.

She has been a pain at times, but has served her purpose as a Farm truck well we just don't need it anymore as we have found a newer F250 to serve farm truck and towing duties.

Documentation of work since we got her is here:
