Hello y’all
So I have been on the 60 forums for awhile now.
More like 6 or 7 years. I still own an 83 60 series that is a replacement of a 84 FJ60 (Dusty) that got t-boned last year in June.
I come here from time to time and see what your 40 series guys are doing.
And always tell myself “ I should of never sold my two Fj40’s I had back in 87 through 1990. Now I can proudly say I am a new owner once again of this 1971 Fj40.
it was just delivered today from central California.
And it is a diamond in the ruff to say the least.
everything motor wise is complete it has the usual rust in the rear sill minimal though.
and few dents here and there. She has been sitting for awhile now. She has a three on the tree tranny and a under dash transfer shifter. It also came with an extra 4 speed floor shifter fj40 tranny and transfer case.
It has the had the drive shafts in the rear of the truck! And the rear parking brake drum. It came with the bezel upside down. So I immediately flipped it to its correct position. Started vacuuming the pine needles and dirt it inside and in the engine bay. My plans are to hopefully get her running and baselined replace what it is either broken or missing. Which really isn’t much. park lamps, turn signal lenses, maybe possibly rear tail light lenses.
Drain the fluids and replace, check brakes and convert it to front disc brakes.
With the salvaged parts I saved from my 60 series.
And if the motor is seized I have good running 2f that also came off my fj60.
So here are a few pics as she was sitting in the lot where I saw it. And of it here in my back yard.
Will be back and forth from the 60 series forum to this 40 series forum.
Talk later!
Cheers 🍻

That looks like a great starting point. Nice 40!

1. I'm thinking I would re-position the whip antenna to the side of the rig where it does not beat against the back side of the rig 100% of the time I'm driving.
2. I'm thinking you might be interested in the rear license lamp cover/bezel I have in my ebay store- - -just saying.

Welcome. Looks like your top is in rough shape like ours. We are thinking about going w a soft top vs messing w repair or replacement of fiberglass. I’m following.
Yeah
I have another fiberglass top coming for it. It got crushed with snow back all these years it has been sitting and possibly a tree scrape from what I see as well.

Whip is coming off!
I will surely look into it if the price is right!

Did some deep cleaning of the interior of the 40 series.
wiped down some thick dust and dirt off the dash ,front seats, and rear jump seats.
bucket turned into mud.
Discovered broken motor mounts and trans mounts. Those will be on order.
The ignition key was stuck and the cylinder would not turn. Sprayed some PB Blaster and eventually it came loose and now I have a working ignition key.
Hopefully ToyotMatt can cut me some original keys for this rig.

Pulled the plugs today on this lovely Father’s Day!
they all look pretty good!
Sprayed PB blaster down the cylinder holes.
let it soak in for a day or two.
then try to move the engine by hand help it break loose.
Installed a battery and I have some power going to it.
light switch don’t work.
will replace that.
oil was at level and not to bad. It is dirty but I will change oil it once I’m ready to turn it over.
Small steps!

All you fathers on Mud have a wonderful Father’s Day!
cheers

Switches are fairly easy to clean and restore if you are not too brutish opening them up to get to the contacts underneath. Just bend the tabs slowly and only as much as needed to remove the contact board. Use electrical contact cleaner or a pencil eraser on every contact point then reassemble.

Good luck with the build. I too have a 71. Did a frame off resto-mod to it back in 2009. I spent so many late nights and weekends working on it instead of spending time with her she calls it The Land Cougar.

Congrats on the purchase!
I too have a 71 I picked up near LA and brought back with me to the East Coast.

Do you have any info on the upper dash pad? Looks like it was wrapped in vinyl at some point? If so someone did a great job! I might look into doing this as replacing it is $$$

I don’t have any info on that dash pad.
but yes from the looks of it it was down very well. Cleaned up nice too!

Started on the rear brakes today!
they didn’t look too bad. Needs new shoes and a wheel brake cylinder but overall not bad.
cleaned up the parking brake of thick mud and grime. It’s actually lighter now….lol.
