Hope to find out more about this club - I live in Fort Mill - and have the FJ40 my dad bought new when I was in the 2nd grade.

She sat for a few years- so I've got her running again. Other than the basic tune-up I'm about to undertake building the carb (hopefully she will run again).

After the carb rebuild I'd like to have the tub taken off the frame and both treated for rust - the body cut / painted to be presentable (but not restored - this vehicle will be used).

Any recommendations appreciated for the boy work.

I took this pic about 20 minutes ago on a trip behind my house.

Cheers,
FFN

Looks great, Fly. There are lots of us with 40's in the CLT area. Very cool that yours is a family truck. We usually try to meet locally once a month. Haven't set a June date yet but we'll make sure to let you know. There's usually a thread started a week or so out from the date. We do 2 big club events with our folks from all over NC in the Uwharrie Nat'l Forest area. There are a variety of smaller events that we do throughout the year, also. Look at our events calendar in the sticky section of our clubhouse.

A few of us are in Fort Mill and Tega Cay. They'll chime in to say hello before long.

Welcome! That's a great looking rig you have there. To echo what johnvee said, try to come out to some of our events!

As for the body work, are you planning on doing it yourself or farming out the work?

Thanks - I'd like to join some of the events (Maybe some are bivouac style? - I have a sh!ton of camping gear that needs to be used).

I am not going to do the body stuff myself. A man has to know his limitations. If you know of someone that is reasonable and again: I am not looking for a restore, but just want to arrest the rust and make it presentable, please let me know if you have a recommendation.

Welcome ... That 40 obviously has a lot of sentimental value.

As far as body work goes, a lot of local folks tell me that Young's body shop in Fort Mill is pretty good. I started a thread on body shops in the CLT area and got a few suggestions. My 80 needs a bit of hail damage repair.

I can handle the tub work for you as well. In Chesnee SC

Welcome! I'm just around the corner in Tega Cay.

We do have several trips throughout the year and a fair amount of them involve camping. You'll be able to put that investment to good use.

I recovered a very similar 40 out of a mud hole just down from that picture some years ago. Would that happen to have been you? I was driving a red LR Defender at the time. I only live a few miles up the road from that spot as well.

The camping we do at Uwharrie is bivouac (if I understand its meaning correctly) but there are bathrooms and showers available at Group Camp, which is where we host our big event in September.

Since you're in SC, I was going to recommend Stan, as in @NCFJ . The pictures I've seen of his metalwork are art.

@NCFJ - I'd like to get up with you and see what your assessment is if you have some time in a couple weeks. We leave for FL today for a week.

@Cirbo - yes that was quite a few years ago, the bog towards Sugar Creek just across the road from where the pic was taken. Thanks again!

@GLTHFJ60 I was using bivouac loosely. Im an ex Jarhed and that's what we called it. Most of my equipment is minimalist type gear for backpacking.

I've never been to Uwharrie and Don't want to beat my truck up, but do want to get down there. I hear there is all levels of off-roading....

On a sad note: I traded my wife's 12' Trail Team FJ this week. It was badass and I'll miss it, but she couldn't make the transition from the Avalanche she drove from 02' to 12'. She wanted a smoother ride and more space for family road trips. So, we traded it for a loaded Forerunner Limited. :-(

At Uwharrie, you can control whether or not you beat your truck up. There are plenty of trails that a stock FJC can drive up. In the event you're at an obstacle that you don't want to attempt, there are usually bypasses, and if that is not available, there is nearly always enough room to turn around and go back.

Welcome! Glad you found us. Let me know how that carb rebuild goes.

Just ring me up when you return and we can fix a time for you to come by.

FFN,
Just making sure you saw the CLT meeting thread for this Sunday. Come on out and kick some tires. PM me (start a conversation) if you need any further info. I'll be driving my 40 out there regardless of how hot it might be.

I just got in from west coast of Fla - lots of salt to be detailed off of a boat and gear. If I get my arse in gear in the morning, I plan on being there. (weather permitting - no top on my FJ either).
