Bought Turbo Landcruiser and engine went within 150 miles. Need suggestions.

I know it's hard, but try to stay on topic and recommend someone in the Socal area that can either rebuild or replace his engine.

This sucks. But I still don't understand why people can't just leave well enough alone. 80s are not designed to go fast. Period. They are slow, indestructible vehicles as Mr T designed them. They weren't meant to get there fast, just get there.

Tough crowd today @2KCruiser ! $h!t happens sometimes, unfortunately it happened at a really bad time. I wish there was something I could do to help but I can't so keep on building badass Cruisers and don't let the mud slingers get you down!

In all seriousness though, this isn't really anyone's fault. The 80 found out it was going to Arizona. It knew better. Only white 80s belong in Arizona. It was trying to tell you!

A couple observations :

1) Even as someone who now owns 4 cars in a 2 adult family, I'm amazed at the collections of cars people own out there in the world. A turbo trans am sounds awesome.

2) The story makes me sad. Just buy your new rig and it dies. Sorry dude.

3) There should be plenty of engines floating around if you're diligent. Obviously we know junkyards aren't full of 80's just waiting to be gone over, but they can be found for sure.

4) Rather than going FI, why not try one of the LS swaps that people have done if you must have that power? A crate LSx would probably be about the same amount of hassle and similar cost to rebuilding a block and re turboing. Or hell, turbo the LSx

Even if you do find a replacement engine, you're still going to want to find a better method of tuning than relying on a Fuel Pressure Regulator if you don't want to end up in the same place again with a blown motor. For longevity, if you have the bankroll, I'd have that truck shipped to a shop that can pull of an LSX swap and ride off into the sunset with a huge grin on your face.

This is a case of bad timing. @2KCruiser seems like a good guy and was helpful to me in my turbo build. Sometimes s*** just goes sideways and the fact it happened right after your purchase really sucks.

If I remember correctly, that truck has a rear-mount turbo, which should make things super simple to just plunk a new 1fz-fe into the engine bay. Heck, don't even have to hook up the turbo again if you don't want to. I'm sure another mudder will be happy to pick up a compartmentalized rear-turbo kit for some $$. Or hook it back up and turn the boost down. I'm running 5.8psi and my AFR is pretty good (get's a little haywire at partial throttle, but I think it's safe).

:edit: Late to the game :o Glad to see @2KCruiser is doing his best to help out. As my stepdad would say, "life's a bitch, and then you die."

I disagree, having had 3 turbo petrols and 1 supercharged, as well as afew gturbo factory turbo diesels etc.

35s, 7200 lb, 2100lb camper on the back, 4.56 gears, gt35, intercooler, and a nice tune.

When i needed a 4.5 [head gasket failure, drove it a long way to get to next town] Slee had one they put into SNOWY for me as a good second hand unit, might have some from V8 swaps etc still laying around.

I'm going to keep my opinions of this whole deal to myself for the sake of brevity etc... Because there are obviously 3 camps to pitch your tent in here. I will just give my advice. Put it on a car transport truck and see if you can get the seller to pitch in on the bill. It didn't cost that much for me to have my abortion of a crew cab long bed powerstroke f350 hauled from out of state to my place and it had a dilapidated 15' cab over camper on the back I think it was $300. @v8 killer you really have 2 ways to go, either haul it home and have it repaired there or repair it down in SoCal where it is likely to cost you more money and inconvenience. I'm sure @2KCruiser isnt out to screw anyone over and that he may be willing to help out with transport cost, he seems like a decent guy who is regretful of how your situation played out. Either way you go it's time and money, it's just a matter of how much time and money you want to spend.

Going to bring LC home to Phx from L.A. and see what we can do to repair or rebuild what I have. 2KCruiser has been helpful in diagnosing and storing the Cruiser. Its just bad timing for me. Even though I am pretty bummed about the situation I really do not think 2KCruiser had any bad intentions.

Probably the best thing to do. Try @Tools R Us and @inkpot . They are in Chandler. Great people. Also have great sources. Good luck.

Turbo Landcruiser back on the road again. Rebuilt engine with Cometic HG and ARP head studs. Changed turbo to a more efficient turbo, added front mount inter cooler, fixed boost/afr gauge, and removed the 2 catalytic converters. So far so good. Running very well on 4.5lbs. of boost on stock ECU and fuel system.

Guessing wheeling isn't part of the intended use? I would smash that stuff in a flash!:hillbilly:

Glad you got it up and running. FWIW, I'm running 6 psi boost on stock ECM and no problems

Is that the cx racing intercooler setup? Probably not getting a lot of air in that location, but better than nothing. That's a lot of charge piping!

Glad to see it back on the road :D

how do the rear mounted turbo feel when driving?? been a bit skeptical about them

Glad you got it up and running. I was thinking a good used moter, new hg and heaf rebulf would be the way to go. Then focous on making the turbo and fuel system RIGHT.

My turbo experience is limited to old school designs. But i still believe it is all about fuel management. Then on a lower priority heat managment of intake air temps and engine temps. But fuel managmant is really the key.
