Both CV Axles on my 2002 LX470 with 75K miles since new are leaking.
My right inner boot has a small opening.
My left outer boot is leaking but I cannot find any opening nor slit nor hole and it appears to me that it may be leaking around the band and there is a lot of grease all around the axle.

Right inner boot:

Left side has a lot of grease but I cannot find the opening and wonder if the leaked grease is from around the band:

I've ordered the Cardone 66-5185HD CV Axles because of it recommended here and the reviews on Amazon.
Also that the boot has more bellows.

It surprised me that the inner boot failed rather than the outer.

Is there any value with the old OEM CV axles????

I just rebooted my original CV axels for just under 100 dollars. Take them to your next local club meeting and I bet you can sell them as is.

You could reboot those axles for about $80 and have better axles than anything else you can find. The inner boot kits are less than $40 each, and the outer boot just needs a new worm gear clamp. It takes an extra 30 minutes or less to do the inner boots and the only “special” tool you need is a three prong gear puller, which you can rent for free at an auto parts store.

Have a similar problem as well. Inner boots on both CV axles had grease around them. Couldn’t find any holes. Cleaned the axles and will drive to see if they start throwing grease again. Hopefully you can get yours fixed easily. I’ll post an update on mine once I find anything.

Order boot kits from Cruiser Outfitters and use the OEM axles. Any aftermarket CV hasn't gone well for most here.

I have read that the OEM CV axles were preferrable.
BUT, I think of my 2002 LX with just 75K miles, always garaged, never in rough terrain and both axles are leaking.
Then I read that the Cardone CVs have extra bellows that might make the gaiters more durable.
I'll keep the OEM CVs and might just order those boot kits just in case the Cardone's are problematic.

I also recommend re-boot the OEM CVs over the Cardone's

OEM boots often need reclamping. Mostly the small inner boot clamps. They'll weep from between axle & boot under clamp.
It's very rare OEM boot, to just rip open without external force. Unless old boots were subjected to extreme cold or heat very long term.
Holes are from road object, poking through boot.
All aftermarket CV (AKA FDS) that I've seen, are junk. They don't last.

I recently replaced both inner boots on my LX. They were not leaking, but I saw cracks starting to develop at the bottom of the smallest bellow, and decided to be proactive. I figured at 17 years and 230k miles age was just taking its toll. The cracks ended up being halfway through, so who knows how long they would have lasted.

Just received this pair of CV Axles for my 2002 Lexus LX470.

Looking closely at them I don't see how the Axle Nut is put on.
Everything I read is that this one is supposed to work with my 100 and Amazon says its the right fitment.
Are my eyes lying to me??

They will fit, but they will try and escape in a few months

I have never replaced a CV Axle so I'm a complete nube.
Watched some videos on how to do this but was thinking I saw an Axle Nut.
Looks like a very doable job but "Murphy" inhabits about everything I do.
So you guys don't like Cardone but prefer the Toyota OEM CVs???
What is the Toyota part number and about how much do they cost?

What they cost depends entirely on where you buy them. If you're not in a hurry, send Dave, at Japa4x4, an email. No one beats his prices.

The Cardone is great as a cheap trail fix option to get you home so you can buy an OEM axle. Long term, I wouldn't put much trust in them. as I've understood it, it's not the bellows that make the difference, but the number and size of the ball bearings inside the reman/after market. I've had at least 1 non-OEM axle on my truck, installed by a tech who orders from World-PAC. It was bad well within a year.

I keep a stack of old OEM axles in my garage, and always take one with me for trail trips.

Make sure you watch a video doing this on a 100 or 470. We secure the axle with a C clip, not a nut. You’ll want to have new C clips on hand. They do stretch and get loose if used multiple times.

2001LC do you recommend the McMaster clamps for reclamping the inner small boots? If so do you happen to know the part number of the ones you recommend?
